Fastest was the audi 80 2.8 it did all of the clock until the needle hit the stop . .
But it was so well planted on the tarmac it wasn't scary at all
The moggie minor traveller At 82 all 4 wheels felt like they was coming off the steering was twitching from side to side and the rear window open all on its own . .
Won't be doing that again .

Ford XC Falcons get real floaty and shuddery around 150km/hr. I've been reliably informed that they (and XA & XB) come good over 170 but I wasn't keen to try it. Tried out a mates '02 Holden Monaro once when he first got it. Straight out of the box with only 1100 kms on the odo. Was spooky quiet with factory mufflers and deceptively quick. Left his place, got to the top of the village street by the open road sign and thinking about third gear looked at the speedo and it was over 110km/hr. Out on the highway at the local speed limit of 100km/hr it was pulling 1100 rpm in sixth gear.

Didn't get to drive it, but this, pictured at a MotorPunk sprint day, must be the hairiest thing on this thread? Holy curse word; I like that. Been looking for some inspiration on triking in reverse with a difference.

All out power isn't where it's at on the street. Low powered, tall, skinny tyred hatchbacks offer very good fun:cash ratio. The bigger more powerful stuff is great and all but you'll barely ever have an opportunity to really enjoy outside of a track day and while they might be cheap to buy initially, they can get expensive very quickly to maintain unlike the aforementioned biscuit tins. I believe the phrase you are looking for is 'Slow car, fast" Think you have hit the nail on the head dear boy... P.

Mid 80's doing work experience for knibbs fiat in manchester the days of x19, regatta, mirafiori, uno, 126, along with lancia deltas, y10, integrale.
After completing pdi checks the test drives were always interesting/scary/eventful.
Woodhead pass (manchester -sheffield) was the road of choice extremely interesting in strada abarths & delta integrale's complete with martini decals & drivers who must of watched to much rallying. Or they were just loonys. Never managed to go on that road in uno's or y10's, wonder why.

I used to use it 3 times a week between 2000-2004 (usually around midnight), in 2000 there wasn't any camera's on my entire journey from Sheffield to Manc. Can remember getting frustrated on night in my 205 Rallye as a WRX was holding me up - the fool was slowing down for corners & then booting it on the straights lol. Was very impressed with one HGV tractor unit with trade plates on - he didn't hold me up at all - even around the bends!

my Herald 1360 convertible with a dolomite overdrive gearbox would do over a ton and the piston rings were leaking alittle oil so when you booted it then let off, flames would come out of the twin exhausts. It scarred the hell out of me but passing other cars at a ton on the motorway and giving it a blip so the flames would come out the back was excellent. The wolesley 1300Gt with a bunch of mini cooper bits was fun too for chasing XR2is and XR3s in the eighties until the nut on the end of the steering column worked itself loose and you lost the steering. Oh and the higher torque at the wheels was too much for the old girl so she would undo the wheel hubs every now and then. It was a scaffold bar job every couple of weekends to stop them falling off. Loved both those cars and wish I still had them.

For me it was an Astra 1.4 mk3 8v estate I bought foolishly on eBay. I'd been doing a bit of buying and selling at the time and back in the mid-early 2000's these things were the easiest cars to sell ever, particularly the 1.7d estates, people phoning you at 730am from the freeads etc. I bid to £105 and won it for £104, still t&t but scruffy. When I arrived to collect it the guy was a proper old hippy living in an old static caravan behind a playing field. As is usual with these things he claimed it was "the fastest thing on the planet as its ex police" and how he once drove it to Germany late for the ferry at over 100mph the whole way. Looking at the various drug paraphernalia around the property I assumed this to be an exaggeration of mammoth proportions. Looking around the vehicle revealed the " minor accident, but fully repaired" to be a large flat section of steel mig welded directly over the old panel and a slightly wonky rear wheel. Pulling away from the property it did seem very lively, odd with 180000 on the clock. I got it out onto the A465 and not really paying much attention to my speedo I noticed I was at a ton. My mate following behind in another Astra 1.7D was left for dead, I slowed down and asked him what that was showing, the speedos were bang on. I used it for a few months and on a slightly wet night coming out of work it was still wheel spinning in 4th!!!! Coming around the roundabout and gunning it saw 125 on the clock and begging for a bit more, a similar stretch in my 328 Beemer pulled the same speeds. I used it for about 6 months til the ticket ran out and ended up giving to a lad in the mot centre where it failed spectacularly, he then took it up the woods and pretty much destroyed it. Never found out what motor it was but I'm guessing a 2.0 litre 8v had been fitted in as they look pretty much the same as the 1.4 perhaps with a hot cam in it or something. I've had the 1.4 8v since and it's nippy but nothing like that was. The homemade rear beam repair made for some very odd handling and a bit of sideways action wasn't out of reason. Happy times.

Scarily fast has to be my mate Martins Citroen Ax 1.6 16v turbo, 350+bhp it's eye wateringly fast, scary and just wrong lol. It kept up with a 996 turbo up to 150mph (on a private test track of course, not something stupid like the A3) Some of the sheds that my mate has when I worked at Halfords in the early 00's were scary by their lack of mot's, grip or amount of rust. Delta turbo, Uno turbo, Cavalier Sri, RS Turbo Combo, Sierra 2.8 estate, the list went on, and the guy drove them like they were on fire (occasionally they were lol ) Pre eBay days really so all bought from the pub/word of mouth.

As a driver, a jacked up wrangler jeep on PHat tyres, felt like i was driving one of those single spring ride on things you get in kids playgrounds. Funny yet terrifying.
As a passenger, taking an Austin Maxi off the clock. And some.
