Looks like ive bought a bedford, 2.3 slant 4.
I know the vans have low comp dished pistons and you can swap them for car flat top pistons.
My question is, what are the dissadvantages? It will make more power so presumably must use more fuel but I cant see how it could. Cant see why torque would suffer either. So why did they fit low comp anyway? Just so the engine is low stress?
Id like more power but don't want to harm economy etc too much.

Hi, Low compression is for lower grade petrol so lower power and less stress. Higher compression will give more power, but depending how you use that power will affect fuel consumption. Because it's more powerful means you don't have try as hard to make progress along the road. As always fuel consumption is down to your right foot. Sometimes low compression engines have a different head rather than pistons so check first.

The Cf's have dished pistons. head is the same as car head I believe.
Alot depends if I can even find 2.3 slant 4 pistons anyway!
Hadnt thought about the petrol quality thing, there set up for 2 star!

Low compression also means they are more suited to running boost either from a supercharger or turbo. But yes it was more to give more tractability and the option to run on 2 star

as for pistons, wasnt the 2.3 slant the basis for the lotus engine? and the engine in chevvete hsr's and that sort of stuff?

Yes.
Not too many shared components with the lotus though.
I did think about putting an elite engine in it, or fitting the twin cam head (apparantly needs some oil and water way mods) but not sure ill bother now.
Will swap the pistons out if I can though, waybe bodge some twin carbs on, but as I say, don't want to harm economy too much.

I havent collected the van yet. Once ive got it ill pull the head and check/measure the bore. Ive seen oversize pistons, and I don't mind over boring, so I'm sure ill find something.

I would be tempted to run it for a bit first - the 2.3 in the CF's was supposed to go pretty well even in standard form, economy isn't a known strong point though
