The clue's in the title to some extent, but to add a bit more to the question...
I have lots of ideas surrounding putting different engines into things (mostly Land Rovers) and one or two I'd actually fit into something if I could get hold of them.
The problem I usually come up against is finding an example of the engine I'm after that comes in at a reasonable price, the ones I'd say we're suitably cheap usually require seperate purchase of all the ancillaries and hardware required to run it.
Ebay seems to be rather inflated prices, whilst breakers yards are generally very expensive or just bare engines at prices you wouldn't entertain.
I've seen a lot of threads on here where people are buying good examples of engines for little or no money for their projects, and I find myself (perhaps a little jealous?) wondering where I'm going wrong looking for something similar.
Good luck on other people's part, or am I looking in the wrong places?

I normally find it's cheapest to by a whole car to break and then you can recoup some of the outlay by selling surplus bits.

Trouble is breakers use ebay as a price guide and ebay parts well that's just bloody expensive because of all the scamming that goes on.....
So yup buy a spares / repair and brake it yourself...
I bought a tdi passat estate two month ago for £100 for the exact same reason and I ended up taxing it for a year..

I suppose it's my own fault for living in the untamed wastelands of Cumbria, but up here even breakers can be strong money, and the ones worth having are often at the other end of the country.
I'd rather be up here than the south coast though.

It does depend on what you are looking for engine wise to fit into a landy. What sort of thing are you looking for to put in one ?

Darn 'ere in the sarf there is more money about and people will discard cars more readily and put little value on them. I'm not being hateful or condescending but, Would you be more willing to travel? Colin

I find its best to advertise for something , like i do with facebook groups . Then you get someone thinking ' ive got one of those i will never use under my bench ' rather than trying to buy something someone is selling for making money .
It almost like you are doing each other a favour that way ,, they get rid of junk and get some beer money and you get a cheap engine

I think there's far more older vehicles being run daily till they drop down South than up North, definitely where I see anyway which is Surrey and South Yorkshire. Probably due to everybody being up to their eyeballs in mortgage debt.

Pick a part in Erith sell complete engines for £100 but you have to remove them yourself, everything else is also dirt cheap. Hope that helps

I'll make a stand here for the lumped together breakers yards. It may well be that many places will ask high high sums for engines not worth the half of it, or sell it minus all the ancillaries, or even not tested, but not all are like that. Some will test them first, some will sell them cheap, not every one uses ebay and some are positively cheap.
I've sent engines all over the UK, and to Europe, because even with freight we're still cheaper (and more reliable, and more pleasant) than local places. Put the word about what you're after, or ring a few places that offer delivery. Try to get a medium sized place rather than a big corporation type breaker and you may have better hunting.

I have no problem with breakers, although my most local one seems to price every engine at 150 quid regardless of what it is.
But there are various breakers. The one said, it's just a little yard with a high turnover of the most modern cars. I go twenty miles down the road and i get a unit full of VW engines on the floor.
It depends what you're after. If you have a Hillman Imp that needs an engine, and you look for an Imp engine, well i don't know about that. Personally i'd be a bit more open to what's available - i put a Seat Leon engine in my '85 Polo, and parts are plentiful as a result.

In general price paid is inversely proportional to the effort expended. Lazy people will be the ones paying the highest prices.

What engines are you looking for I have a few in the barn .. Things I've considered recently include a Merc OM606, a 4 litre Jag AJ6, and a Toyota 1uz-fe V8. The Merc and the Toyota I accept won't be that cheap, but there was a time the Jag lumps were available for £150 with a gearbox attached. Last look on ebay saw one at over £900!!! Can't help but think that a good one would make a 110 shift quite nicely, and with current fuel prices, actually be an affordable runabout. I agree that some breakers are better than others, and the smaller ones are more willing to broker a deal or let you get on with things yourself, at the same time we've one locally that charges more than some of the bigger ones in Carlisle. I don't mind the idea of looking further afield, but again, travel costs often push the price up enough that you'd be as well buying a more expensive one anyways.

Banger boys have always been good for bigger stuff with FI. They can't use it so they tend to take it out and flog it on.

I sometime wonder how breakers make money, I recently sent out the feelers for a set of front springs for a Vitara and they all came back with a similar price to new bits.

For the last 5 or so years, i've found all engines on either facebook, or by strokes of luck at the local very small junkyard
