Thought I would put a thread on here about my old Ford, tho she's no cossie I got her last year, with a second child on the way needed the ability to transport the fmily around, and while I was at it get something nice to drive, capable of towing, a diesel and most importantly a retro, so something i would actually want and like it! I have always really rather liked the original Mondy, its a handsome car even in 'lorry' form, my Granddad had one when I was young and it's getting quite rare now (vanished almost overnight?!). spotted this one on gumtree in Leicester (a fair jaunt from cheltenham but nothing compared to plenty of adventures on here!) The Mondy fitted the bill completely, (even red! no idea why but i do like a red car) convinced the management that I should have a look at it (read, should go buy it if all is well) all was well, the seller stuck it through an MOT which she flew through and there we go! Now I've had her a while, enjoy driving her and done a few bits of work along the way, improving tired parts etc which i shall no doubt blab about in a wee while... I thought I should post a ramble about her

Another L reg Mk1 on here I think the Mk1 mondeos time has arrived, same as it did for it's predecessors, the sierra and cortina, now moving into classic status ? Thtat looks like a nice clean one, you get a fair bit of car for the spec, LX i assume? not sure what my GLX gained over the LX ? i know i'd prefer the intermitant rear wiper only the estate gets ! on the to do list for mine Have a look here for easy to do mods www.mirez.co.uk/ModMenu.htmLittle mods like illuminated inner door handles amuse me no end and any femails that get in will be more impressed by the illuminated sun visors than any handbrake turn I have to say the Tds are way more refined in the mondeo than they were in the sierra, i guess the few extra BHPs and the intercooler help somewhere along the line and V good insulation, mine cruses rather well at 70 (+ or - 15MPH) at around 3500 rpms it's a pleasant place to be. I used to have a red TD estate, huge loading/kipping area for shows/tat buying Mines here retrorides.proboards.com/thread/185280/family-fleet

The only Mk1 Mondao I had was great I loved bar one thing,
I had to book an appointment for power,no idea why ( at the time I had no knowledge to investigate ) it just was so laggy it was embarrassing once it was moving it was a flyer....

My Mk2 is a 1.8, but I put 2.0 cams, maf, throttlebody etc in it and it's not really slow. Just lacks low end torque, all the power is really up past 4.5k revs. Which is a pain if you don't want to sound like a tit.

hehe hey bortaf buddy i spied your mk1 on here a while back, it looks pretty tasty i'm not going to be modding the outside at all on the old girl, i rather like the 'patina' i have been looking at getting some alloys, but as my local scrappy has been doing me mondeo 15inch steels at 5 quid a pop with oodles of tread atm i am happy with the steelies hehe i am not sure really on the lx/glx differences, i have a manual sunroof! i do quite like the old GLX wheel trims, snazzy as far as they go! yeah the intermitten wiper is good, tho when i bought the car took me a disappointingly long time to work out that the switch was on the end of the stork... (red faced!) i love the load bay, as well as those tasks you said it also serves as a good toddler play pen usedabused hey man! I will agree she doesnt have power throughout the rev range for sure, i distinctly noticed this when a turbo hose let go... on a week long stay with my folks, in deepest darkest Cornwall. hills... :-O when she gets going tho, she does shift sufficiently Sounds pretty good ride Christina, get a thread up!? although i have spotted you have a 'tina too i will admit i prefer my diesel torque to petrol power, the old girls power is around 2500-3500 revs when the turbo kicks in, but she obv wont rev anywhere near yours on the 'sound like a tit' point, you should hear me in my missus' cars with their auto 'boxes... with a gear box that wont obey i get far to heavy feet.....

as i have owned and got used to the ol'gal have been gradually collecting bits, doing odd jobs and such... replaced the aforementioned errant turbo hose, and fitted a new accelerator cabble for good measure as the old one was folding in on itself. had the local garage replace the front wheel bearing, which was an MOT advisory so get that done was the thought the other advisory was pitted break disks, as it had been for two years previously when i searched the history... went to order new disks and pads, was greeted with "would sir like these, they are cheap Chinese discs for the old car?" hmmphf! Nope. Ite got some proper Ford disks from Germany, very nice and only 20 quid a pop more than their lesser associates. I don't fancy skimping on my brakes really.... the new brakes were a reward for the car blowing her rad core on my driveway AFTER a 100 odd mile motorway run with my daughter with me. new rad fitted from spares stash, not a bad job but the rad mounts are under the car so have had 22 years worth of solidifying.. one was fine, the other refused to budge and without the tools to hand had to push the old girl accross the estate where i live to a local citroen main dealer and badger them to use a heat torch! i think obliged so as to get an oily (was mending an oil leak at as i was there) coolantly sweaty-from-pushing the car me out of their shiny showroom off topic a wee bit, but was dissapointed no blokes offered to help me push the car, was going about quater of a mile through a modern housing estate they just drove by.. builders in vans laughing in one case. real helpfull. i am well over 6 foot (and actually used to be a builder!) i would help push a car no questions asked. two women offered some help to push a bit, and to them i am most greatful, they were not big lasses either! coincidently the lady of the manner was furoius with me for pushing the car by myself, as i have a notoroiusly bad back... my physio people havenmt found out tho hehehe. while i had the gal up on a borrowed ramp it was noticed that the two shocks were odd (n/side original, o/side from a mk2) so went in search of a new set. from my mechanic, £74 a side! from ebay a 'brand new' in box pair of old unipart stock, £28 the pair For the next card requiring holiday the missus has treated me (spoil-sport found me out before the day...) to a new 3 part clutch kit, orginal NOS Ford item from the bay of E, as the car is on 133k miles still on original clutch, will wait until at least 150k tho until i fit it.. same probably for the shocks as altough they are odd the car is Ok atm.. clutch cables are on order too, as the current one is at the limit of its ajustment and is a wee bit low. will prob fit one now then another with the new clutch tracking down rear shocks too, seems Poland via ebay is the cheapest, so if they are up to scratch will be getting the missus to call in the native tongue to try for a discount hehe. other than that, heater is still jammed on hot, but have got a replacement cable and contro; unit to fit depending on which is the cause of the problem... tho as its cold atm i can live with that until warmer climates! massive blab done i think

Under the pump, or on the front side of the pump there's a brass nut thingy which has a locking screw.
From memory you unscrew the nut out (14mm)as much as you can whilst still being able to lock the thin locking nut in place.
What this does (don't know why) is let the boost come in about 2000 rpm. Makes it such a more nice car to drive.
I did this with about three I had.
I can help you if you post up pics etc.

The nut and threaded screw on the side is the boost compensator (has a pipe going to it from the manifold), you adjust it to up the fuel pressure as the boost comes in the only other fuel adjustment is inside the body behind the large yellow cap under to the front of the pump, that's the max fueling screw (allen head). My shocks are fooked as well mate, the ST wheels and decent tyres only partialy make up for it, it get scarey mid corner as the tyres grip and the body leans, and leans and leans , dare to spin a wheel and the spining wheel thumps up and down like a scared little bunnywabbit

If you spend enough time playing about with the pump settings you should be able to get 130-150 bhp from the standard setup which makes it way better to drive. You need to control the black smoke with your foot a bit though as the boost compensator is a bit basic. If you could work out a way to get a Bosch VE pump on there it'd be even better.

hey guys! thanks for the tuning info, all help much appreciated as this is definitely on the cards when the weather dries up first things first is getting her as 'refreshed' as possible, currenlty collecting parts at a fast rate! gave her a power steering service this week to, new fluid and belt next job will be the blower (finally) and hopefully putting the dent in the offside wing right.. (will add photos, bit dark atm...) only a wee dent from some goon in the car park, but annoying so will be hoping to sort that out... got a spare wing stashed away, but they are blue atm, so a last resort! got my tracking done today too, as the denter also knocked that out... no damage to anything though luckily... got a garage today woohoo so somewhere undercover!

I do like a the mk1 mondeo. Watch out for the cam belt tensioner on the derv as these are prone to failure before the belt. I had two fail on me when I owned one but luckily it didn't do any damage. I'd recommend doing a belt and tensioner change every 30k.

I'd recommend doing a belt and tensioner change every 30k. this is good advice it went on this engine about 7-8k miles ago. the enigine ended up having a fairly substainsial rebuild, new cambelt, water pump etc...

Not much going on but driving in Mondeo world atm! the parts gathering for the planned future mini-overhaul continues, front wing next on the cars as the original is starting to gain some rust, as are the rear arches, these appear to have been previously repaired so a thorough replacement of these will be added to the jobs list.
In the meantime she has rescued my wife and kids, when the wife's toyota Rav4s battery gave up (on the first long distance run in it...) and has transported a number of bicycles, which were kindly 'donated' by some thieves to a local convenience store, to their temporary storage en route to Africa for people there too use. So some little bit of adventure, gotta love automotive versatility!

right, a dent. so someone 'kindly' altered my cars offside wing a small while back whilst I was exploring the local supermarket... (a feat made more impressive as I parked in a Parent-and-child space, in order to extract said offspring with greater ease) anyway... not much I know, and I like and want the car to show its wewll earned patina, however it needs to be mended. now the question is shall I push it out, or go the whole hog and replace the panel? as it is starting to bubble some on the front lip...
