So, I still have the e23 as my rolling restomod bit of tin but I felt the need for a proper classic, or at least a car that can legally wear black number plates..
Cue driving in the snow back from the midlands 200 miles the other week in a 1970 VW 1600 type 3 fastback.
Progress pics to follow this weekend once I have done a bit more work to it.
Suffice to say it is solid as anything, welded up pans and engine area etc.... just needs some tidying inside and a few bits like a new fuel pump then plans are some more lows (easy to adjust torsion bars), some narrowed steels on the front to gain maximum tuck and some banded steels on the rear to gain some stance and then it'll be ready to roll to the shows in the summer.

ok some pre-release photos as the car stood when i got it home nice bugpack exhaust, not so nice is the lack of heat exchangers and hence lack of heating while driving it home in the snow, mu hands and feet where numb! I'll be backdating the indicators to pre-69 spec ones, and I now have a bonnet badge back on and all the chrome mirrors, door handles and headlamp rings are back in place. Plenty of space for dropping another 2 inches when those 5.5s are swapped for 4.5 steels (esp if i have them adjusted to et55) and narrower tyres. The car will remain bumper less And thats all i've got for now

Great cars but look out for hidden rust. My car was solid as far as I was aware until the strip down, these cars do hide grot very well.
Good thing is its a 1970 car so its the last year before they fitted the vents on the C pillar and filled the cavities with expanding foam so less chance to rust there. 1970 was also the last year for wipers that park left (on RHD cars), torsion bar bonnet lifts and plastic air boxes at the front (the steel airbox is a rust collector).
I am bias and old so I would say leave the ride height alone, the ride is too good to mess with but will wait to be proven wrong on the looks.
If I can help with technical details or repair experience let me know and good luck with it.
Dave
P.S. The link to my resto is below my sig pic.

Ahhh think this is my old fasty sold this and my 69 as a pair to guy on vzi years back. The TRD numberplate was very fitting as it used to be beige... (if its the same car) cant remember the full plate. When I had it , it was on banded GT steels on the rear, Standard ones up front with 2cv tyres on front. it had clear front lenses, bumpers and all red US spec rear lenses back then though.. Oh and an original radio bracket...

Ah sweet, any more info or old pics? (yes it is yours as it was beige originally)
It will be going back to banded steels on the rear, only 5.5 inch for clearance, original 4.5s on the front with 145/65 15s on it to give a bit of tuck and clearance, wheels are going to be audi nimbus grey with chrome mini moon disc hubcaps to give it that 356 porsche look.
I will be going to red rear lenses too, but any info you have about the car or pics from your ownership would be a nice addition!

Ive definatly got pics of it and my 69 somewhere , Ill have to dig em out for ya. Theres a pic or two of it sharing the drive with my bug, 69 fasty, hightop baywindow and a couple of polos haha... Guessing its had another engine since I had it, As it was a little limpy with burnt valves. Had exchangers on it too then... Still got the under dash original radio bracket in it? I'm assuming someone had attempted a replica of keith seumes old fasty going by the colour...

Not sure about new engine but id guess so as it pulls well and runs nice, twin carbs with flat mesh filters on there etc.... one day it'll have a 2.2 if i ever get the cash to build a 180-200bhp lump!
Not sure what he's based it on but its kinda a bit too 90s for my taste, hence going back to chrome and steels. Id like to change the colour back to beige or light grey one day too. don't think its got a radio bracket, its been through a few owners in the last 10 years and a few botched restos and bad welding which has now been sorted at least.

yeah I remember it having some inner wing troubles, and possibly the spare wheel well too., I got it off a chap in Portsmouth, He liked my Honda ST70 monkey bike, so I swapped it for the fasty haha..
You should google keith seumes fastback, and youll see what I mean regarding someone trying to re-create it..

Little update here for anyone interested, I have refitted chrome headlamp surrounds and stripped and polished the door mirror (not shown) and the door handles (not shown) and the indicator housings (again not shown lol) Plan this weekend is get my order from machine 7 with new fuel pump, pushrod, filter and hoses and fit that little lot then fit these wheels which ive had non balloon spec tyres fitted to. Don't worry about the rough bits, its only a temporary blow over to see if i like the colour contrast with the black and the chrome dish hubcaps i've got on order, they will be stripped again and painted properly! Rears are going in for banding to 5.5 inch at end of the month and i'm talking to limebug about adjustable rear spring plates to drop the IRS rear axle while maintaining the ride quality, the front will just be dropped on the T Bars another 1.5-2 inches

And I see what you mean now about Seumes fastback, it does look like a poor imitation of that car. Maybe one day it'll have a nice 200bhp 2.2 in it and actually go nicely like a cal looker should lol

Much improved already with the chrome back on! My brother had an orange bug and it looked good on black steels! Keep it up.
