6 Cortina's in 7 weeks now!
This one is fitted with minilite replica wheels with new debica tyres. Paint wise the car isn’t great with some blistering under the paint & has red paint marks on the passenger door. The bumpers & grille are scruffy. It has a 1600e seats fitted which are very different to the lotus seats. It's got a homemade plate on the carbs to hold the throttle cable. The car doesn’t have an original air box fitted. The owner’s had the car for twenty seven years so holds great sentimental value.
The owner’s son thinks the lock up was checked out a few months back as it looked like someone had tried to have a look inside.

It's hard to believe someone would race a lotus? Surely there's far more money in ringing/breaking it?

Lets not speculate eh , it does not matter either way , someone has lost there hard earned pride and joy .
I really really think practical classics should do some sort of feature on classic theft , it beyond ridiculous now and we only hear about a small part of it i guess .

'Without speculating' its well known that the rarer the car, the more sought after etc etc the more kudos and doffing of the cap there is. Some pretty exotic stuff has been raced in the past, obviously, they have all been well beyond salvation ( the cars not the drivers........ ) so...

Nice idea, but its just crossed my mind that something like crimewatch should cover it now that its becoming nothing short of an epidemic.

IIRC PC did do a feature of sorts when their Granada Ghia got pinched years back. So much publicity was raised the car became to hot to handle and it was eventually recovered. It wasn't stolen to race either........................

The fact is its the cars on here we here about but does anyone know how many are stolen a month ? I bet 20 classic cars go missing a month and its obvious that they end up being ringed or broken and sold on . These cars and parts do not dissapear so they are getting back into circulation somehow - either forums , ebay or bent classic car enthusiasts/garages .
Perhaps if the bigger picture was widely reported it might get people talking and people nicked . How hard would it be for practical classics to run a feature in conjuction with the police or someone and have a phoneline set up who could correlate all this information to be passed on to local police - in effect doing half the work for them ?
I know P.C have done things in the past campaigning for stuff , leaded fuel , car tax exemption or similar so why not this burning issue which is totally gone way to far - its a epidemic .

I wonder if people are using the banger rally as a bit of a cover. A car like this would be identifiable surely if it was taken for something like that. I reckon this car has been known about and people will be concentrating on banger racers while this car is off to be ringed.

I could be wrong but as a PC reader for 30 years I'm sure that was the case?

I think its beyond pointing fingers now, look at the issetta bubble car, the citroen van, theres a whole variety of cars going missing, wether they are being ringed or stripped of parts, or both, or neither, its now about protecting everyone elses classics, which probably means literaly chaining them to the ground. Garages and security fences just arnt good enough.

I could be wrong but as a PC reader for 30 years I'm sure that was the case? My memory has faded somewhat but I could have sworn that the car was recovered after a tip off partially stripped down? A similar scenario happened to a MK X Jag, didn't it? This is such an issue now I cannot see why all the classic publications cannot get together to have a weekly/monthly roll call page highlighting whats gone missing and to advise 'if you see any suspicious ads for parts etc....' That will get the word out to the widest possible audience, still loads of people out there that don't use forums per se but are regular mag buyers. The industry created off of the back of our passion really needs to think about using its reader base to help a bit more. I know one of the weeklys has a stolen section but they all need to do it in triplicate, its getting stupid now.

The Granada - which was damn near perfect in every way - did get raced, but a couple of years later. I was in it the night it got pinched, and we were being followed to the restaurant I was sure and I wanted to pull the rotor arm out, but the consensus was I was being paranoid.
To be fair, lots of racers called us up to tell us who had it and where it was, and it wasn't their fault the police didn't have any interest in recovering it and arresting people. A policeman once told me to my face that cars are generally insured and if they are not they should be and the theft of them is not something they'll waste their time on.
I found it particularly frustrating as I had spent a long time convincing my editor to let me run a feature on historic stock car racing and a build up of a Pop all from bits people were throwing away, and to generally change PC's coverage of racing. Stealing his car kind of put an end to that and I sold off all the bits...
I did suggest PC gave away a set of letter and number punches and encouraged everyone to mark their cars in a secret place so that they could be identified if raced, but that would again rely on it moving slightly higher up the list of police priorities.

Hi, if that's the case then it should be the insurance companies that should be convinced into pressuring the police into doing something.
