Just watching the tellybox and spied an advert to build your own Ford Mustang... Er, in 1/8 scale.
And its so easy, all you need to do is buy the DeAgostini Partwork magazine and collect the model pieces over the next 100 weeks, almost two years!
1st issue £1.99 2nd issue £4.99 98 subsequent issues £8.99 each
So, thats nearly £900 for a 1/8 scale model and it'll take 2 years to collect and build it, if indeed you don't get bored/Fed up with it all and just give up! For this kind of money you could probably own your own Mustang that you could actually drive, albeit a 'fox' Mustang! But a Mustang never the less! So who's up for buying the magazine?

I do wonder if anyone has ever completed one of DeAgostini's "Build yourself a....." magazine things.

Yep, I've wondered that too, I had a friend once who got about 1/3 of the way through building the Red Baron before realising it was going to cost him around £1000 and giving up! But there surely must be people out there who have not only done it, but then have gone on to build others!

Bloke at work built the nitro RC car a few years ago, took him a few years and we worked out it would of been far cheaper just to get a Tamiya one (and would probably work better too).

A while back i scored a complete magazine build R/C Subaru imprezza at a carboot sale. I worked out how much it would have cost to complete it, cant remember how much now but it was alot, even for a decent rc car. Except it wasnt decent, it was pap. So we drove it down some stairs and out of a 3rd story window a few times, so at least i got a bit of enjoyment out of my £5. To be fair the mags were quite interesting, but i still would have felt a bit miffed if id have waited all that time and spent all that money on a piece of crud like that. Ok, VERY miffed.

What worries me is in the small print it says DeAgostini reserves the right to withdraw these offers in the event of insufficient demand. You could be £400 into you build and DeAgostini decides to pull the plug because too many people have dropped out! Leaving you with a half built model of a Mustang!

I built the subaru It had a wibblepoo gearbox so if you tried to slow it by using reverse the cogs melted! Total waste of money

Quite a few of the built 1/8 Aston DB5's crop up on the bay and they look pretty decent, seen them up to a grand on BIN's They only seem to make £3-400 on a no reserve auction though, way less than build cost.
Some people seem to make a bit of money selling parts at inflated prices to people who are missing a bit or two!
I'd rather buy an old stock Pocher kit if i wanted to invest big money in a large scale model, they are awesome things.

Saw the advert for the millenium falcon about an hour ago, thought it looked interesting until I saw the £8.99 price tag per copy, and that it would last for 100 issues.
Although compared to the sort of prices the lego 10179 millenium falcons exchange hands for, the magazine one seems cheap

Quite expensive as mentioned 900 pounds could buy something interesting to use on the road so a non starter. Saw the mag in local shop / quick calculation and put it down.

iv'e done quite a bit on a real '67 GT500 4 Speed and driven it quite a few miles not many people get to do that. the 7 Litre FE engine is quite a squeeze in the engine bay. power steering is way too light. iv'e got the first issue and may only get a few issues to mount the front end on a plaque to hang on the wall rather than spend that sort of money. says on the write up it should have engine and horn sounds, working lights and brake lights, wind up widows and working steering. still a lot of money though at £38 a month for two years.

I saw this on the TV the other day. I must admit I had to question my own mathematical skills when I worked that out at £900. Thought 'surely not'. I know a million other things i'd like to spend £900 on!

The plaque idea sounds good, a few quid for a front end and then duck out £900 is just silly! even if it has got working lights, engine sounds and keep fit windows! A quick search on eBay 5 minutes ago at cars under £900 was a far more attractive proposition, loads had working lights, power windows, engine sounds and you can get in them and drive them! I like models don't get me wrong but it's a ridiculas price if you ask me!

maybe people are attracted to the build it week by week because they can afford the weekly magazine price and are addicted to anticipation / cannot think what the £ 900 attraction would be though
