well, the missus lupo is getting to the point where it really needs to come off the road for some more serious works than the kind of thing i can do in a weekend. its due a clutch, the gearbox needs a rebuild, and the suspension is knackered, again. but i guess thats the joys of doing nearly 65k in 4 years in a car absolutely on its with 40% more power than stock id been looking round for a while for something suitable as a replacement. our lifestyles have changed a bit since buying the lupo, weve bought a house so her daily commute is about 8-10 miles of country lanes, no fast roads (tbh at the time shes driving youre lucky to break 40mph on that journey), so it meant she could easily use something older and cooler day to day. it had to be older, preferably correct wheel drive, tax exempt or low tax band. a few months worth of searching and all id ascertained was the values of pretty much every possible candidate where way above what i wanted to pay. i had a budget of up to £2k, and there was little for that money that i thought represented good value- everything seemed to need loads of work, something i wasnt adverse to, but it had to be reflected in the price. fastforward to a couple of days before christmas, and this popped up on one of the FB trading groups- its a '93/'94 'san remo' special edition, whatever that means. i know a fair bit about ladas by now and the only deviations from stock spec i can see are the stickers that say 'san remo' and the associated red pinstripe..... but its an estate, 1500cc 5spd, only 46k on it, largely complete and with a load of spares. it wasnt too far away being in dartford, and by chance i sort of knew the previous owner to the current one, so a few questions to him via FB to see if it was as good as the seller said, a cursory viewing in the dark whilst i was on my way down to TABmas, a deposit left (it was a few days before christmas so i was a bit skint), and a deal was done, with the agreement id pay for and move it before the end of january.

roll forward a little more to last tuesday, and ive paid the balance and a mate of the current seller who does recovery has agreed to move it for a reasonable price, so i don't have to mess about with trailers and things, so it gets delivered. it looks like this(sellers pics, but its no different, other than it don't have the dishy wellers on it)- and tbh, its really rather good for the £500 i paid. as noted its low miles, but has various scrapes and dents in the bodywork. basically all the hallmarks of being a proper giffermobile. but, it came with 4 spare doors, which when swapped on deal with 3/4 of the bodywork needed. its got a reconditioned weber carb fitted (appears to have been soda or vapour blasted and rebuilt with new gaskets), although it is missing any form of choke setup, something i need to address- otherwise mechanically it looks very good. the back half of the exhaust is missing, as is the rad and heater matrix. the brakes are spongy and theres a few minor oil leaks, but nothing of major concern. its only a couple of days work to go through and do everything, once all the parts are obtained. there is recepts for many new parts over the years, including a clutch, slave cyl, fusebox, rear lights, and various braking system parts. on of the previous owners was obviously pretty big on its russianness. theres more in/on the glovebox too- the first thing i did was chuck a fresh battery on and get it running off a bottle of petrol- the hoses to the tank were removed, and it smelt badly of stale petrol, so i guess someone has started to remove the tank to clean it out. it went sorn in 2010, so i guess its been more or less sat since then. it wouldnt idle but i had been told the carb was never set up properly, and there were some obvious airleaks that need dealing with so i left it at that until ive got the cooling system working and i can run it up to temp rather than only for very short blasts, and the fuel system re-enstated too. i didnt have any of the parts to do the cooling system, so the next logical step as to drop the tank and clean that out. think i might need a new one of them- then, a few rusty bolts later and a lot of wiggling and swearing and the tank is out. the inside is surprisingly clean, but there is remainants of a milky red liquid inside- no idea what thats meant to be?! so, tank cleaned out i just gotta decide if i paint it before it goes back in. aside from that, ive also been randomly buying things. this popped up cheap on ebay, so i had it- lancia fulvia coupe dontcha know. a nice thing with a fake woodrim and stainless spokes. its a bolt on fit for the horrible lada one, i just need to do something about a hornpush for it. next to go will be these- replacements are sourced, just need to get them delivered next week.

and lastly for now, some words about my plans for it.
as its going to be the missus daily, its not going to be anything wild. tbh the reason i sold my other one was a got a bit carried away and just made it 'too much' of a car for what it would ever be used for. this will be more a stock restoration (including a respray, so itll get some minor body smoothing to clean it up a bit), go through everything to make it reliable/usable, then drop it and some wheels. stock interior except for steering wheel and gearknob. stock mechanicals except for carb and exhaust. just make the whole car a really good clean example with decent paint and a nice interior. there will be a colour change though.

I will come forward as the before previous owner, what remains of my rover 45 is in the background of some of those pictures. I have a box of spares to send to you somewhere which I believe also includes a set of brand new "asbestos free!" brake pads. Bookmarked.
Look after my little "Lavrentiy" (Laurence).

Look after my little "Lavrentiy" (Laurence). i think i already have the brake pads in the box of stuff that came with, EBC ones from the olden days? anything else that could be of use is appreciated though. in terms of actual progress, nothing much has happened so far, cos I'm too busy with actual work- reconstructing land rovers from sheet steel and rubbish quality pattern panels. but ive sorted through the set of doors that came with the car as spares, compared them to the ones on the car, and picked the best set from the two. 3 of them where the ones that were already off, so theyve been stripped of all their widgets and gubbins, i welded the pass. side lock hole up, then theyve been dropped off with my mate george in the spray shop round the corner from my workshop for him to work his magic (paint is one thing i don't do). they're all rustfree but they have a few dings that need adressing before paint. first there was some of this- and then some of this- hes doing them bit by bit between other jobs, and hopefully he will have the set in primer by the time that i- 1.get the car in the workshop to do any welding needed before that can be prepped and 2.the missus has chosen a colour.

Great logic. Surely painting a Lada must be easier than changing a clutch on a Lupo Will be nice to see what you make of this!

Great logic. Surely painting a Lada must be easier than changing a clutch on a Lupo Will be nice to see what you make of this! see I'm glad someone else subscribes to my logic its dead easy when youre getting someone else to paint it anyways.... there's been minor progress. I'm still stuck in the parts acquiring stage really, which is taking longer than expected. i bought a used-but-clean K&N for the weber off a mate for a fiver. I'm waiting to hear back about a rad and heater matrix off someone on here whos breaking one. only major step forward has been these- 13x7s, and actually genuinely 4x100, not 4x4" made to fit 4x100. i still need spigots and wobble bolts, but thats no big deal as i didnt have the right bolts anyway and the spigots were £7 for a set. there was a cap missing but i picked another set up off ebay so i have some spares as well. tyres are 165/55R13, i swapped the ones i sold to davenger back off him as he found them a little too low-pro for his car, so i stuck him a set of 175/60 on instead and everyone was happy. a colour has been chosen too. i wont say what for the minute though, youll have to wait and see.

Yeah, a little. Been spending money buying bits more than anything before I really get stuck in. Picked up a second hand rad locally for a bargain 25 quid, and new hoses are currently on their way from russialand.
Wobble bolts for the wheels are here, as are a cherry bomb, over axle bend and some pipe to do the exhaust. Only bits really left to buy are a heater matrix and tap and another carb to get the choke bits off, and then ive got everything. I'll probably buy some brake bits as well though.
Oh and I did I trade for a new front wing too.
Then I'll get it on the ramp, blitz it all then Kick it over to george for paint.

So after a brief interlude of er, a year or so, I kinda remembered I've still got this and need to do something with it. So I dug out all the parts I've bought, had a look at what's what, and started doing something with it. The alleycats had been robbed for the mx5 I bought, but the 165/55r13 tyres deemed too small for that so were still in the build pile. Obvious answer was buy some more wheels, preferably also 13x7, 4x98 or 4x100 PCD, and it would also be a bonus if they had some bigger tyres to go on the mx5. So I bought these- 13x7 cheviot Hotwires in 13x7 and 4x98 PCD. Even came with a set of suitable shank bolts in lada/fiat thread size, as they had previously been on a fiat 131. And to top it off the tyres were 185/60s. The rears were a pair of cheapies, but the fronts were yoko A008Rs. Much fun on an mx5! They're fairly cool wheels, At first glance they Look like appliance wiremags or enkei mesh. But they're actually Australian made, and from what I can tell, extremely rare in this PCD. I had to do a bit of cutting down to the rear bolts to make them fit though, as they were hitting the brake internals. I took the big tyres off and fitted the low pros, and I decided as I was fitting them to the car is take a couple if coils out all round. The back is comically easy to do, just remove the lower shock bolts, jack the car up on the body not the axle, and the rear springs come out with a bit of tugging. Chop em, fit back in, refit shocks, fit wheels. Honestly took 20 minutes! Front is a little more involved, up on axle stands under frame rails, hold the spring tension with a jack, unbolt the shocks (the top nuts are a bit of a sh1t to get to), unbolt the Top balljoint from the trailing arm, then lower the jack. The ARB had already been removed. You have to pry them out the last little bit but there's not much tension there, and they obviously go back in a lot easier once they're a bit shorter. So, back together it looks like this- It's still probably a bit high yet, but it's a good start. More importantly, it's got me fired up about this thing again, so I'll be getting on with it and getting it up and running and on the road. I also cleared out the Inside, and refitted all the rear interior that had been removed. Next job, refit and replumb the fuel tank, and then do the same to the cooling system. There really isn't a whole lot to do before its MOTable then.

Been going through the engine bay today, correcting faults and reassembling stuff. Fitted the second hand rad after giving it a flush through, and all new hoses, clips and thermostat. Thermostat came with the car, hoses I got from LADA Moscow, via eBay. Came will all the right size hose clips and free stickers and actually got here pretty quick, so they're to be recommended. Cheaper than uk suppliers too. Next, you will see I had the manifolds Off. I noticed some of the studs were missing, there's been a half arsed attempt to remove the EGR system that had left both the inlet and exhaust open to atmosphere, plus there were other holes that needed plugging. It was only when I started to sort this I realised there was no gaskets fitted between the Manifolds and head! So everything came off, the manifolds were all sealed up with threaded bungs and thread sealer (I realised after doing the big one it was the servo take off so replaced it-the servo pipe was fitted to the water jacket pipe!) one hole had to be drilled and tapped to do this. the surfaces were gone over with a file to make sure they were flat, and I cut off and ground up the EGR boss, one to make it look tidy and two so there one less thing to bash my knuckles on. All the surfaces on the head for gaskets were scraped clean- then i cut some high tensile threaded rod up to make replacement studs for the missing ones. Here's a little trick for you, if you want a stud to screw in to a certain point then stop, take a blunt chisel and deliberately deform the Threads where you want it to stop, then screw in and just nip it onto the deformed bit. It'll stay put where your spinning a nut on then. I then had to file out the Phenolic spacer bigger so it cleared the butterflies on the Weber carb. It partially covered the manifold hole as a restrictive plate as standard- And lastly, the carb. It's got a Weber DGAV on it, presumably 1600 pinto. It's all be vapour blasted and regasketted, but the entire choke setup is missing and the Linkage has been butchered a bit, so ideally I need to get another carb as a donor for these bits. And then make a linkage up as half of this one is missing. I also did sundry other Jobs like regasketted the Water rails, replacing the missing engine mount bolts, identifying and reconnecting various wiring, etc. Then, after ages trying to find the second box of bits is hidden in the workshop, I refitted the sender to the fuel tank, spent ages rolling round on the floor to get the tank to the car, and connected it up. Obviously it started to rain whilst I was doing that, so I packed it in.

Apparently they came without choke as well (funny it's still called DGAV for some reason). I recently bought a knackered chokeless DGAV with virgin spindle holes, just to replace the top on one where the choke spindles had badly ovalled the holes. You can replace the throttle spindle bushes with cheap MR128-ZZ (8x12x3.5 double shield) bearings if they have air leaks.
Keep up the good work, your threads are a pleasure to follow.

Odd they made em without a choke? I assume Mine had one as there's a snapped off bolt in the boss where bolts on. I just looked in eBay to see about buying a knackered one to donor bits- man they daft money on there! I only want the spindle and flaps so am loathe to pay 60 quid for one for that.
