Would love to hear from you blokes with some ideas on a decent 2 seater soft top for myself this year. I'm quite drawn to the BMW Z3. Well within budget & with tan leather + a decent set of wheels I can't find much to dislike about them. Despite the MX5 reminding me of the early RX7 I owned many years ago I can't quite warm to them. Finding the MR2 a bit uninspiring too. 2k would be my absolute maximum so the cheaper the better really.

Was looking at the cheap convertibles myself, for £2000 I would be looking at an SLK for the fact you will have a comfortable cruiser more than a sports car, and when parked you don't have to worry about the soft top getting vandalised/ripped.

2.8 Z3 would be my choice, SLK 230K is a lovely thing to experience mind you (sound great, go like stink), but horrible to look at! MGF - no way Alfa Spider - would be nice if a 3.0 V6 is in budget but I wouldn't touch the TS engined ones Barchetta - Different but LHD only MX-5 - fantastic but you don't want one! MR2 roadster, good fun but horrible engine note and just not very inspiring That's all I can think of for your budget but I'd definitely get a manual 2.8 Z3 if I was in your position

Audi TT, seem to be plenty in your price range. Didn't realise the Audi TT convertible was under £2000 now, nice bit of cheap chic. Had hoped to buy a TT Quattro but I don't fit in one (6ft 5in tall, with size 12 shoes)

Alot of TTs I saw below £3k (I saw quite a few last Spring ; I was looking for one as a daily) were wrecks and money pits in the making despite being described as 'great' ; I was being picky but OTOH I didn't want a money pit either. I won't bore you with details of what was wrong with 'em but simply, buy very carefully at that price ; you could easily spend more cash on one than a 'good' one and still have a pile of curse word at the end. Alot are abused badly. From speaking to a few peeps it seems you need around £4-5k to get one that won't cost you an arm and a leg to maintain, and even then they are not trouble free
Z3 is a good shout but you'd want the 2.8 and it seems these start around the £2k mark.
Alfa Spyder is not a bad shout but the TS engines have pricey cambelt changes and are thirsty for what they are. MGs are a potential goer but I have never liked 'em.

The best things come in small packages. £2k gets you a low mileage fsh uk spec car but there's plenty about sub £1k. Great little machines, super reliable, choice of vtec lumps and always puts a smile on your face. Mine was a 1.6 ESi with 180k on the clock and still tight as a drum.

Or go very left field, proper 80's, very retro with cheap classic insurance and best of all RWD I'll be selling mine for around a grand sometime soon

Z3 is a good choice, but test drive one first and don't expect outstanding handling. I borrowed a 2.8 convertible while they were still new, quite bad droning noise and didn't handle as well as my E36 328 Touring. Daughter loved it when I picked her up from school in it and used the electric roof though.
Depends what you want it for really.

Lol some interesting ones here. thanks for the suggestions. I kind of realised that I couldn't afford a TT that's worth having. I like them very much but couldn't trust myself not to fall in love with a money pit. I drove an MGF years ago whilst working for Autoglass & thought it was great.. . at the time but they don't do it for me at all now. I do have a soft spot for Alfa Romeos having sold a 156 last year. Like the fact you don't see many of the Spiders & they are definitely different. The Japanese offerings are probably all great but I think something German would suit me better at my age. Hope I'm not dismissing any potential belters there. We had an Audi 80 cabriolet last year which was very nice but my wife used it mainly & decided she didn't like it. This will be just for me. Z3 is sill winning for me but if the price is right I will consider just about anything.

Almost as light as the original thanks to complete re-invention for this guise, but with an even better engine from the vvt Celica, this little mid-engined sparkler is easy to overlook..

S&S Preparations are a company who modify TR7s. Think of what Frontline do for Spridgets . I cannot believe I forgot about TR7s! TBH I would say they are already rising in price. If you can live with the looks which seem to look OK now, and a very cheap dashboard (sorry, but even my 205 had more quality about it inside!). That said, a sorted TR7 is a lovely thing to drive and not too tricky to get there either. Rust is an issue admiteddly but you can easily check for that . I would say an MGF is probably not that much better, and don't even mention the MX-5...
