Hay peeps I'm building a rear engined trike and now in a position to test ride and have no drive, it has a 1.6 long block cav engine mated to a mk3 Astra auto box. The box we no works before we removed it and fitted. I can select park it locks the wheels how ever if I select any other gear it won't drive at all, I'm abit at a loss now as it has wires on it so guessing it was run by an ecu before so now I'm thinking surly there must be a way around this. And it can't be putting back to manual as is not option, any suggestions ?? Great fully recieved

The wires are probably for reversing light and also starter lock-out (so it can't be started in gear).
Have you ensured the oil level is correct ?

There's 2 plugs that look like reverse sensors and a big unit if wires under the selector arm

I believe there is a bit more to it then that. A 30 second google search show that these cars flash a warning light if an error is detected within the gearbox and drop into limp mode(3rd gear)
Another possibility could be the torque converter not working correctly

I've bin the selector switch gibbons as it's on a weber carb. How can I check the t/c is working?

There is a selector switch box thing on the top of the gearbox - these sometimes failed on these.

I've binned it bud as its only a gear selector for the Ecu to no what gear its in, we thinking it could be torque converter coz we jack it up and we spin in gear just not under load
|

Maybe torque converter hasn't any fluid in it ? I've no idea how you fill them up / bleed system etc.

I think the transmission is an aisin model. It uses electric solenoids which is controlled by an ecu. The selector switch provides inputs to the gearbox along with other engine sensors. You need to wire an ecu to get it to work. You can check that the converter is inserted correctly in to the oil pump by opening one of the cooler lines from the box. Oil should flow in a steady stream from one of the outlets. If the oil pump doesn't pump oil you'll have no fluid pressure.

Yes fungus it's a totally different engine attached now,
Jetfiremuck yep sounds like 1 of them boxes and yes we got oil going throu the oil cooler pipes.

Did you install the torque converter onto the gearbox and seat it properly before installing the engine?

can you manually feed 12v to one solenoid at a time and see if you have drive?

I'm not sure as there 2 on the side and about 6 wires goin in to other, can't even find a wiring diagram to find out

The big bunch of wires are coloured 2 orange . Black, white, yellow, brown. Blue.
2 seperate switches yellow. White , the other yellow, green. Dunno if that any help
