Good morning all,
Has anyone else had the issue of complete strangers parking their cars in front of your rented council garage ? I've rented this single garage for just over a year, which is about a half mile from my house and so far I have encountered 7 different cars parking in front of it and several times it's the same car, 4 of which were so close that I couldn't open the door. I've left polite notices on the windscreens, but it keeps happening.
I appreciate that this is a small problem compared to some, but I pay good money to rent this garage and having its access blocked is now starting to wind me up. The thing that I can't get my head around is that I'd personally never park infront of someone elses garage,as it's not only rude, but what if they had a car or bike in there that they needed to get out in a hurry ?
I guess my question is, can I legally tow/drag these vehicles away from my garage, in order for me to gain access, or is there any other solutions that you guys have used ?
Thanks,
Malc.

If its a drive way you can have them removed by the police for causing an obstruction, don't know about a garage though.
Do you know anyone with jacking wheel dollies? Borrow them and move the carto somewhere very awkward lol.

The garage is in a block of 4, mine being the one on the far left with a single parking space in front of it before the pavement. I'm not 100% sure whether the Police would be interested as it's not my property and they seem reluctant to attend most things nowerdays unless there's a guaranteed nicking in it for them.
I have contemplated blocking them in with my car, but I'm worried that they'd damage it to get theirs out.

Do you rent the parking space as well as the garage? Might be worth enquiring on the Speed, Plod and the Law section on Pistonheads - lots of proper legal bods there that might be able to help.

Hi Rich,
The rental agreement just stipulates the garage, but with a car parked in front of it I can't open the door so the space is more for access than parking.

For what it's worth, I used to rent a lock up from the local council, the lock up was one of ten in an "L" shape with my one being right at one end in the middle part of the "L" so my lock up was forever getting blocked in.
For a start, I would just phone the police (101) who would then contact the owner of any car that was blocking me in. Said owners were pretty quick in coming and moving their car. I had no issues apart from with one particular guy but that's a story for another day.
However, some good did come out of this as I struck up a rapport with one of the other blokes who used to park in front of my lock-up's door, he had the next lock up to mine but on the upright part of the "L" if you get my meaning so his car was nose up to his door but parked across my one. I didn't need into the garage very often and his car was off the street for some fettling so he gave me his phone number and I would just give him a bell ahead of when I needed access. He would then meet me and move the car so added security which suited me fine.
Hope this helps

Personally I'd find out who owns the space I front. I'd also have a nice sign made you a local sign writer. With a notice to say "access required 24 Hours . All vehicles will be clamped with a £125 release fee." Mount it to the door.
Then if you do have the right of parking on the drive space clamp them. You've not left a phone number so he will be buggered.
That or Jack the car up.and drag it Into the road then ring the police to say it's obstructing traffic.
We had it outside our works unit years back. Turned out the guy was an off duty copper. As it was on the road on double yellows we rang the police. When they turned up and the driver at the same time it was quite funny.

I'd contact the council, before doing anything else.
You might be able to swap for a better located garage.....especially if you give a bit of a sob story, (late for work, demanding boss/wife etc.!), take pictures too.

I thunk what you're dealing with as much as anything is a complete lack of common sense, not just by the owner of the car, but by the window lickers at the council. I have a similar problem, I have a drive by the side of my house that I own, but the council have put permit parking bays along the road, which of course goes across my drive. 9 times out of 10 when I come home I can't park in my drive because some idiot has parked across it, but worse than that, if by some miracle I do get into my drive at night, when I come out in the morning I can't get out because some idiot is blocking me in!! There's nothing I can do about it either, as apparently if they're displaying a valid permit legally they're entitled to park in the parking bay that obstructs my drive! I've been to the council about it all several times, and their advice to me was that I should buy a permit for just £50, and I could then park my car in the bays that obstruct my drive! I've tried to explain to these idiots that I don't need a permit as I have my own drive, but to be honest they're not interested. So I've splashed out on a couple of permits, and I do tend to try and block people in who inconsiderately block my drive these days. Sorry about the rant, but I can't get out this morning!

What about a wee sign on the door. No parking. Garage in constant use.

The sad thing is, there is a no parking sign but as Pistonpopper points out, we're dealing with people with little common sense or respect for others. I think I'll phone the council in the morning and ask their advice and see if they can put up better signage etc ?

Put a note under the wiper saying 'please don't park here, I can't get my car out when you park in front of the doors'.

A tyre valve remover is your friend. They'll stop parking there after they come back to their car several times and the tyres are flat. Don't remove the valves as that's causing damage/theft. If the valves are slightly loose is enough for the desired affect. Inconvenience is a b1tch and so is inconsideration!

Borrow them and move the carto somewhere very awkward lol. Its actually not an offence to block an empty driveway, the plod won't do anything if someone is blocking access to your drive. However it is an offence to block an occupied driveway, and plod can get the obstruction removed if it prevents you from exiting your drive. Now garages ....who is to say there isn't a car in there you need to get out

Apparently you can use metal trays to make the car slide - I would advise shoving it into the middle of the road where it will cause an obstruction then it will get towed straight away.

This reminds me of my dad going ballistic at the local police back about 1980, he was a London taxi driver and obviously needed to get the FX4 out of the garage at strange hours, early one evening he came in ranting that someone had parked over the garage ,he duly did the right thing and called the police, they arrived and said that as we lived in a close it was private and they couldn't do anything, my dad was very very irate has he just wanted to go to work, now I'm not condoning what happened next please remember it was over 35 years ago and my dad was quite a hothead back then, he said to the police " so it's private then and you can't do anything then?",, to which the police said they could not, my dad then went into the garage revved the cab up and reversed straight into the side of an Austin 1100!,,, the police should Of done something but didn't!,,, they then went on to help bounce the old 1100 out of the way........nothing ever came out of it and the Austin was gone by the next day,as said I'm not condoning it ,but me and my dad still have a chuckle about that night, I was only about 12 then and its stayed with me ever since........I'm not saying you should do the same btw!

Put a note under the wiper saying 'please don't park here, I can't get my car out when you park in front of the doors'. I've done this everytime, but the inconsiderates don't seem to be able to read. This has also crossed my mind on several occasions too

Thats BS from the council, it is an offence to park over the dropped curb, ring them and tell them you will be charging them for every time there actions in painting bays there mean you are unable to get out to go to work and follow it up with a small claims court letter, those bays will be gone ASAP
