Since a couple of weeks/months I'm restoring my triumph herald. Because I want to use it as my daily driver (once I've got my drivers licence) I planned to swap the old engine out for a newer and more powerful MX-5 engine. The engine and gearbox are out of a 1990 Mazda MX-5 1.6 NA. I'm planning to swap the rear end out for the rear end of an Triumph GT6 so it can handle the power. At first I wanted to keep the fuel injection but then I would need the ecu and al the loom should be connected then I read about someone who had putten two SU carbs on an mx-5 engine and that seemed like a idea but instead of two SU carbs I'm using four motorcycle carbs the almost fit perfectly in the MX-5 inlet manifold. The front suspension wil be changed out for the one from an spitfire since they were made with disc brakes on the front and my dad had those laying around. I found out that the the original intake manifold of the MX-5 had just the right dimensions for the four bike carbs so i could just saw it in half.

Its a pain in the  , the only way I have managed is: create a reply (not quick reply) and you should get a menu bar. You then have to load them into photobucket (usually involves reducing the size) Then cut and paste the direct link from photobucket into the box which pops up when you click on the picture icon on the menu bar in the reply page. |

 the intake manifold on the engine with te four carbs loosely attached. I'm hoping it will al fit onder the bonnet might be an tight squeeze.   I want to go for a more streamlined look on the front of the car and thus I thought it would look nice to remove the chrome bumpers of the car and modify the bumper so there are no holes in it anymore.  bumper has been sprayed with primer.  since the MX-5 engine doesn't bolt straight to the original engine mount i had to make something myself this is the cardboard mold in the correct position. ![]()  after approximately 3.5 hours of welding, grinding, fitting and some more grinding it finely fitted in there. Don't pay attention to the long nuts on it i didn't have any normal 10mm around.  the other side was quite an different story since the engine mounting position of the MX-5 is so far back I had to weld a U-beam to the chassis otherwise the mount would have to be quite long and therefore quite weak.  according to the internet my shift knob will be in quite the right position only problem is that the handbrake needs to be moved back. I'm thinking of putting in an hydraulic handbrake because it would be quite cool to have. |

G'day Feddes. All the best for the New Year. Nice work on the Herald. I did 1 in 1978 for a man I fitted a standard Datsun 120y engine & gear box to it. the only hard bit was relocating the oil filter as it sat over the top of the suspension tower. It went extremely well with the 1200 so your's is going to fly. have fun keep the pictures coming

I did 1 in 1978 for a man I fitted a standard Datsun 120y engine & gear box to it. the only hard bit was relocating the oil filter as it sat over the top of the suspension tower. It went extremely well with the 1200 so your's is going to fly. have fun keep the pictures coming Ernie from the land down under Thanks, originally the engine puts out about 115hp at the crank so with the four carbs on it and hopefully a some what good exhaust is could bump up that number a bit more. I hope i can still make good progress since i also have to go to school etc. |

Looks interesting (I dread to think what the insurance will be for you though?).
Just one point - you need to totally rethink those engine mounts, they won't last two minutes as they're not designed to work in full shear like that. Consider something like the Land Rover mounts and come from the engine straight to the chassis rail instead of coming straight out and adding a vertical beam?

I was planning to bolt the vertical beam to the suspension tower so it would also get some strengt from there and since the mounting position is so high i doubt it would be any stronger since there wil be a lot of length in te mount to the chassis rail and there is not much room left between the suspension tower and engine. About the insurance in the Netherlands it's based on the weight and value of the car so it wouldn't be quite high and i don't have to pay road taxes. |

sorry - must have missed mention of the Netherlands  the rubber mounts are still mounted in the wrong direction though and you'll end up with the engine on the crossmember |

how do you mean mounted the wrong direction? since originally the rubbers are at the same angle as now

i see what you mean but since this engine isn't much heavier than a original herald engine I thought the mount will hold just fine

Shear gives better isolation and most modern cars use it in this way, if you think about it, the bobbin type as per above react the torque in shear anyway.
The real problem is getting decent quality replacement parts, the anglia ones used on my elan +2 used to last 5 or more years when I first had it (25 years ago) now I seem to be changing them every year or so.

  I've had much fun in scratching al the under coating of some the suspension parts. Painted them with primer for rust protection while I'm cleaning the rest so it can al get sandblasted and powder coated. |

I read about someone who had putten two SU carbs on an mx-5 engine *waves I used the original type rubber engine mounts. They work fine but you need to keep an eye on them as the modern reproduction ones are not great and do tear quite easily. I managed to find a couple of genuine NOS ones and even though they are very old have held up much better. |
