I was in my local newsagents today, and where Custom Car usually sits on the shelf there was this... Now I'll admit I don't buy every issue, as a rule I have a quick scan inside a few magazines, and the ones I like I buy. So have I missed something here? Is it the beginning of the end for Custom Car magazine, a bit like when Street Machine started having American Car World on the front cover, and before long the Street Machine logo was gone, along with what was a great magazine! Also I noticed that it had something like 77 pages, except the first page was page 11 I think. So anyone got any ideas?

Incidentally, I didn't buy it, I didn't think much of it to be honest, so I bought Retro Cars, PPC, HotRod, Back Street Heroes, and New Scientist instead.

Oh dear God no - next month it'll have a ratted Corsa on banded steels with a spotty 18yo lass standing next to it.

I imagine Fast Car publisher has taken Custom Car over. No bad thing, really. FC is a much broader magazine now and, sadly, CC has been much in decline since the rise of Mike Pye.

That's the first I've seen of that version of the mag. It seems the subscriber copies don't have the Fast Car branding. I hope it doesn't bode badly for the magazine. I would have thought that Retro Cars, also from the same publisher would be a better title to link to. At least they're both concerned with old(er) vehicles and RC often features cars that I'd call custom. If they had to merge for economic reasons then it could end up as something close to Street Machine (RIP) which would be no bad thing, even if it annoyed some of the traditional hot rodders.

There have been a few issues with "Fast Car Presents" on them. Kelsey Publishing own both titles (along with most other car magazines in the UK, including Retro Cars : www.kelsey.co.uk/brands/ ), with Fast Car being the biggest selling car title they have I guess they are trying to get that market/demographic to pick up Custom Cars, which is why it is only in the shop versions (and maybe only in certain shops?). Personally I think it is hilariously misguided and shows their total lack of understanding of the market, but what do I know I've never run a wildly successful magazine... then again until they bought a load of great titles neither has Kelsey.

CC has been on the wane for years. To me it appears they honestly don't know who they're trying to sell the magazine to. It's bitty, disjointed, doesn't reflect the UK hot rod scene accurately, and tries to cover too many totally unrelated bases. That's before you get to the actual journalism. Anybody who is into any of the niches within the scene will tend to buy a specialist publication instead(usually a U.S. import) as CC tend to gloss over the details so people go elsewhere looking for more depth. as they're very available these days- there's many 'traditional' publications available, plus street rodder, drag racing and truck mags. All of which offer much better quality and quantity of articles for your money.
I think they will really be in trouble once the current paper based generation who don't use the internet start to die off/ pack it in, as what CC tries to offer is done so much better by forums.

Totally agree with that. Picked this issue up for something to look at over chrimbo, mine had no mention of fast car. But a poor issue none the less!!!

Practical Performance Car is about the only magazine in this sector actually written by true car enthusuiasts who know what they're talking about - they could do with a decent proof reader though . . . .

True, a good if short read. Originates from 'Cars and car conversions'' which was a great read, Walkers world etc. Coincidentally I walked past the old IPC building in Croydon yesterday, once the home of Volksworld, super bike, C,C&C, street machine etc, there was always a great selection of bikes/cars outside. Now just an empty run down office block and car park.

Only one proper mag out there for me ...practical classics Same here, been a subscriber for the last fifteen years. I started buying CC in the early 70's but gave up in the 80's when it shifted its focus to body kitted rubbish instead of 'proper' customs. Never bothered going back to it after that.

Practical Performance Car is about the only magazine in this sector actually written by true car enthusuiasts who know what they're talking about - they could do with a decent proof reader though . . . . I can live with the typos because of the content. It's the only mag I've ever subscribed to. When I was younger I used to buy CC & SM every month without fail. I drifted away from both but went back to SM for maybe the last couple of years before it went. It was a shame to see it go because it covered such a broad spectrum. CC when I stopped reading seemed a bit up itself by comparison, a bit too serious. I occasionally take up Octane's offers of 6 issues for a fiver, mostly to look at the stunning photography and plan how I'll spend my lottery win. In a recent issue, one of the writers had put his lovely old XK150 in to a specialist for some work then had them trailer it to a classic car run in Scotland whilst he flew up. There were no typos but I thougt maybe maybe this isn't the magazine for me.
