Quite a simple one. Mk4 escort pulls to the left, its a good vear rather than a gentle wander(tyres are OK, wheels balanced etc) Am I right in thinking tweaking the off side TCA will pull it back. For what the car is I don't really want to give a garage the money to sort out a diy job. Cheers peeps

Hi, Try checking the tyre pressures are correct or at least the same both sides. Then checking the brakes are not dragging, back and front. While it's up in the air check that the strut turns smooth and evenly from lock to lock, not from the steering wheel but by the strut itself. Check that the wheel bearings turn freely and there is no play.

check the Tyre pressure on ALL Tyres, and get your tracking checked. Some garages will do a free check and only charge if they have to adjust the tracking ( which of course they always do). I honestly don't think it worth you having a stab at it yourself but the 1st step would be to check the pressure

yeah don't just go tweaking it with no way of measuring it , you can diy track the car various ways with string or tape measures , but if you give it a look over and confirm nothing is worn or bent then its prob worth just getting it done

You don't actually say whether its veering since you have replaced the rack or track rods or done any suspension work etc. Generally, and ive changed a few racks and had them set up properly afterwards, veering to one side is not something ive experienced, a strange almost wallowy steering yes, veering no. Maybe some do? Normal culprit is a sticky caliper, its only going to be a 10 min job to check out. I'm happy to be corrected!

IMO it could be many things. TCA bushes could cause it but IME they do not wear that badly on the Escorts. The ARB bushes in the arms however do which could cause your issue. However, this can be easily checked. I would not also discount the steering rack mount bushes. Sticking calipers are another cause but I have never had a set stick enough to cause the car to veer that badly yet. You could check for this however easily . You say that the tyres are OK, but are they new or part worn from another car? On one car I owned I was too tight to buy new tyres on the existing rims. I ended up buying another set of wheels which initially were going to be track wheels. Upon fitting them the car started to veer left alot straight away. As soon as the old wheels went back on the problem went away. I put it down to the wheels wearing differently on a car that either saw alot of track action or had poor alignment, this wore the tyres as so. Other than than I cannot really think of what else it could be bar tyre pressures. I'll get back if I remember much else!

give it a run on a dry day and get out and give the front tyres a feel across the treads, check to see if the inner or outer is hotter or cooler
if the outer is warm, its got too much toe in, if the inner is warm, too much toe out
a broken coil spring could also be at fault, I have had them break at the top on mk4 escorts and orion and even with it broke, there was no change in ride height that might have been easy to spot.
check you have a matching pair of tyres
tie bar/arb bushes are usually weak

Cheers for the ideas..Took the OSF front wheel off, only to find the TCA bush was split in two so the car wasn't returning to centre, fitted a better arm and now it's holding much straighter.. The cars going to the oval when it's mot due hence not wanting to mess around with garages.

It's a 1400 cvh, not a straight panel on it. Chap across the way wants to use it for civil war next year.

Tracking doesn't cause pulling, it causes toe in/out. If one side is tracked differently to the other, all that happens it that it evens out once you start moving and the steering wheel ends up off centre.
