Just wondering about this. I've had one for about 10 years and back then they were selling well. I still have it on retention which is fine as the annual fee has been abolished. I stopped using it as I was changing cars frequently and didn't want the hassle of transferring it every time. Had it up for sale on the usual sites for the last couple of years with no enquiries. I check the sites occasionally to see what similar plates are selling for and usually see all the same ones that were on when I listed mine.

Supply and demand,I think.
Too many cheap NI dateless options now, coupled with the high cost of transfer, is putting a lot of people off.

I love private plates. I think it's the cost in some cases, most i will pay for a plate is £250, could call me a tightwad, but I cant justify spending £1000+ on a number plate. Plus all the cool ones i like need a funny space in them somewhere to be read which isn't worth the fines.
I love it when you see a cool numberplate, a salsa place down the town from me had a smart car with "SO 54UCY" on a smart car which i thought was pretty cool.
I've got my eyes on "J19 TCR" on DVLA, July 19 is my birthday and TCR is my initials. Many people would think it is a waste of money but it does make a car feel more "mine" in a stupid way.

Yep lots of cheaper ones about these days. I'll probably end up hanging on to mine as it cost me over a grand 10 years ago. I thought at the time that a good one would be like money in the bank. Hasn't quite worked out that way.
Coolest one I've seen was on a Bentley. P4 YUP spaced to read PAY UP.

They seem to be common on new reg cars if you think ST56 VEV spells Steve, Ive seen a lot along those lines. we have MX54 BJS locally on an MX5 spaced as MX5 4 BJS, cant get much more personal than that.
They don't seem as common as they were a few years ago, I think the personal factor gets watered down when everyone has them

My dad bought one fairly recently for his Beemer,it's a bit vague though you'd have to know them personally to to decipher it !
Best one i've seen was a girl who ran a lingerie shop called Sassy and she had SA51 BRA (sassy bra) on a Bini Cooper,always made me grin !
I guess they are one of things thats a pure luxury and sell well when the economy is buoyant and people have a feel good factor.

I saw an old man driving a new focus back in 2008 with the reg:KN08 END. Got a picture of it somewhere... Totally amazing, bet he was none the wiser. Pic would be interesting as the plate was never issued. Gimme a day or two. It would of been taken on my old Sony Ericsson c902 or some other cybershot camera from that era. Definitely was a clear picture as it was shared about on forums for a bit. |

I owned my private plate from my 30th birthday right up until just before my 40th! After the initial appeal wore off, I got fed up of the annual retention fee (since dropped by DVLA), transfer fees bothered to put it on my car (I don't tend to keep cars long) and generally found it to be a bit of liability. I shudder to think how much DVLA earned from me after the initial purchase fee, and all the fees over the following 9+ years. I'd only buy another if I promised myself I would keep a car for 2+ years.
As for general popularity though, I see masses of private plates on the road. I'd say they are more popular than ever tbh.

It now sits on my E320 estate as we've got nothing else to put it on, and I do use the Benz for work.
G6 DNR is a bit like* GARDNER
However it wouldn't be the first time someone has pointed out what the acronym DNR stands for!!
*if you squint hard and look through sunglasses from 25 yards
As for still in or out of fashion, I reckon I see more 'private plates' now than ever before, although most are not very far removed from just an ordinary number

Transfer costs are as low as they were in the 1980s, in today's money they're a fraction of the price and more affordable than they've ever been. Not a lot of people realise this, but along with a few motoring laws of late, regarding registering and taxing vehicles, life has just got a lot easier for those dealing with registrations. For a start, the £25 admin fee has been abolished, so instead of costing £105 to transfer a plate, it's now only £80. Previously it cost an ascending amount of money to keep a plate on retention for up to three years - now you automatically get ten years at the flat rate. And the best one - previously you couldn't remove a plate from a vehicle if it had been out of tax longer than six months - now it's five years, and this is the new law that has allowed me to remove my own plate from my horribly rotten old Polo, so i can now allocate it to my new one. Swapping registration plates has never been easier, and is now a breeze compared to a handful of years ago - though the damage anti-motoring Labour did in their term means i still have nine years to go before my 31yo Polo qualifies for historic car tax. Something it should've had six years ago! |

The new plate style does allow for some clever stuff, such as 'EA51 JOB' but being full length they're easier to miss. So modern cars only get plates that stand out if they're not the originally chosen registration. I don't like 'spacing' in order to make a plate easier to read for it's intention. It reflects a kind of desperacy. Mine is 'B2 UVA' and you either get it or you don't. Most plates say something, even random ones, it's just a case of whatever jumps out at you. Even if that word id 'Youghny' or 'Eaxcil' or something else completely meaningless, it's something, and a personalised reg will do the same regardless to anyone who cares enough to look. |

My Dad has a two-number-two-letter plate on his BMW. Paid about double what the actual car it's on is worth for it, but as he says, it is one of the very few things you can buy for your car that won't depreciate in value. He had another similar one that he paid £6k for and it sold recently for just under £10k three years later. Not bad.
I see loads of them when out and about, I think they are as popular as they have ever been especially with interest rates on savings being low and things.
