quite like this though

i been seriously tempted to build a gas turbine car for a few years now, helicopter engines are relativley cheap and have gearboxes on em. I heard the Y2k turbine bike start up and its sounds like the batmobile and i need something that makes the same noise. Just need the money for a car i don't have to actually use if i don't want to.

Ooo, I'm sure I've seen that car somewhere... Science Museum I think?

Science museum, basement, near the cut in half mini from the '58 motor show (if they havn't moved them around since I was 11 lol
Its a great, but totally impractical idea. I WANT ONE

To get a standard A40 this low, you'd have to dig a hole to put it in

lots of car companies have played around with the idea, the Rover P6 has weird front suspension to make sure there was room for a gas turbine engine. Its not actually that impractical and most of the problems could probably be solved with modern engines and materials, there wouldnt be much gain over other power plants though so no one is really bothering, i just like the noise.

Leyland Trucks tried it as well. They ran a few experimental Gas Turbine trucks in the early 1970's, Shell pulled petrol tankers with them (yes, really...). Horrendous thirst meant that the idea was never fully developed IIRC.

I think the Rover jet cars are at the Heritage Motor Museum in Warwickshire, that's if it's still open.
I've sat in Jet 2, the BRM Rover gas turbine car that ran at Le Mans. It was awesome, it had tiny doors and massive sills that I believe held the fuel tanks. Wouldn't like to be T boned in it though.
What's your favourite JT car then?
Renault Etoile Filamente? FIAT Turbina?
I have a 1957 Autocar article on the Renault which I might post up if there's sufficient interest.

All well and good until the flywheel breaks free and kills someone

All well and good until the flywheel breaks free and kills someone What flywheel? a gas turbine is far less likely to break than most other engines, it only has one moving part for a start they are very reliable generally which is one of the reasons they make good engines for helicopters and planes.

Could you run a gas turbine engine on veggy oil?

yeah, they run on anything flammable you can squirt into the combustion chamber, peanut oil, deisel, kerosene, calor gas etc etc, obviously you'll get different power outputs from different fuels due to calorific values, i've seen a home built one running on coal gas!!! there are teeny ones about the size of a can of beans that the boffins reckon would work as a portable power pack and make about 10 times the power a battery pack would make weight for weight (inc fuel) cant wait to buy a jet powered torch. radio.weblogs.com/0105910/images/micro_turbine.jpg

JET1 is in the science museum in London, the Le Mans car is at Gaydon. It seems they weren't the only ones playing with turbines in race cars though. This was at Goodwood. It was pitted next to the Chapparal and I think was also American.
