Hi I realise it's not retro but I will be picking up a 2006 Citroen Relay with the 2.2hdi engine (mk2 shape), managed to pick it up for the right money considering its had a cambelt and new injection system in last 12months , mot'd last week and only 93k and one elderly owner. Question being would i benefit from sticking a blanking plate on the egr or will it throw fault codes?equally its as slow as a donkey if I'm honest so is there an easy way to pep it up a little? Not after a racing van but something happening outta the right hand pedal would be nice.....

Get it remapped should help, I can't see you having an issue with the EGR blank as long as it's done as part of the remap! A good service may help if it's not had one in a while also as will a free flowing exhaust!
That's my 2 pence worth anyway!

Thanks for the reply, I realise a remap is the best way too go although it is going to be a workhorse and for what I've paid for it not sure I want to throw probably 3-400 on it for a remap off a 3.5 ton van.....has anybody blocked the egr on one of these engines before......

I'm not sure if you can do the map yourself on these through the OBD port! You may be able too and then it should only cost you like £25 or something .... worth a shot if you can get the software

it shouldn't be that slow with the 2.2 engine, we have a relay 3 at work with the 120 bhp 6 speed puma diesel, granted its never got that much weight in it but still goes ok for about 2.2 tons.
not done egr blank on the puma diesel, but have done on a c5 110 hdi 8v, took about ten minutes including making the blank from a bit of 1 mm sheet...
helps quite a bit I think as egr valves are the work of the devil, it was quite noticable that it came on boost quicker and pulled harder, though the intake was pretty clean.

This is the relay2 so think its around 106bhp ish and just the 5 speed box.......I'm tempted to try cutting a piece of lead to fit as i have a roll kicking about to see if it makes any difference. ....

I wouldn't use lead, I can see that melting or burning away, I used a thinners tin once in a 'emergency get the car working again' blank when an egr valve got jammed open (no boost) and it burned through in a few weeks. Use at least 1mm steel..

Many thanks for the responses, think I will just order a blanking plate from ebay as there only around £4, is there a process to fitting it,?ie when cold or when up to temp etc etc???

No, just fit it. Cheaper to just make one, copy the gasket but sans hole, but yea, if you want to buy one they are readily available.

If they are like the later MK3 Mondeos they may flag up an error unless it is remapped out or you can live with the light on the assumption it doesn't go into limp home mode.
Out of curiousity do EGR really benefit an engine at all bar an emissions perspective?

EGR is used to recirculate a proportion of exhaust gas into the intake (you knew that!). It is done to "spoil" the combustion process a bit and reduce combustion temperatures so as reduce the amount of nitrogen oxides produced.
In doing so it makes the engine less efficient (less power, more fuel) and often chokes the intake with soot over time. The only possible benefits it does give relate to the reduced combustion temperatures giving the exhaust valves and turbos and easier life. Certainly on my A6 TDI with EGR disabled the oil temperature now goes up quite noticeably if I push it hard up a long hill whereas before it needed to be a very long hill (Alp) to show anything.
