Hi all, long time reader of the forum but never owned anything truly worthy of showing off, until now that is. Here's my 405 Mi16, a bit of a French rarity. It was a car I'd never seen when I lived in UK, I knew about them being a bit of an 80's performance hero though so they'd always intrigued me. Then I moved to Australia and I thought my classic Pug dream was over, but low and behold one popped up on Gumtree local to me! It turns out the Aussie's have a soft spot for Peugeot's. (so it looks like parts should be easy'ish to come by) It needs a bit of work to become roadworthy here though, mainly a CV boot and an engine mount, but not too much. The issue is I've always been more of a VW guy so I'm going to have to teach myself as I go with this one. Here's some pics, straight after I got it home, towed by my ute of course, it is Australia after all! (And yes my ute does need it's bonnet painting, haha) Cheers Bruce

I'm familiar with this engine from having owned two Citroen BX 16vs. Is it the 160bhp version without cat? It's a great plant which pulls and screams at high revs. What sort of KMs has it done and is there any service history?
I suggest changing the cambelt if there is any question of its age. Valve stem seals also quite typically hard unless engine has been properly serviced. I had quite a few engine management issues too - early injection system with French electrics is a winning formula. Maybe not so damp where you live though? I suppose the 'Aussie Frogs' forum will assist and guide you.
I saw one of these 405s a couple of months ago - the first one I've seen.

That's the later 2.0 iron block 155 bhp cat equipped phase2 variant, Australia only got that or the 148 bhp cat equipped 1.9.

Correct, it is a phase 2 car so 155bhp and it fails to sound sporty at all! Reckon some induction and exhuast work might fix this.
It's done 230,000kms and has a full service history up until last year, there's a proper wad of paperwork come with it, which makes interesting reading, there really have been many many dollars spent on this car! Don't have the books to hand right now but I think cam belt was done in 2013 at about 180,000kms.
There is a bit of blue smoke comes out of it when it heats up though, could this be the valve stem seals? Did the iron block 2 litre suffer like the earlier 1.9's does anyone know?

its exactly the same head with some small differences so yes they have the same issues, not so prone to head gasket issues, but bore wear can be an issue with the iron blocks, don't seem as hardy as the liners, however is easily bored if necessary.
They can suffer with oil starvation problems, exacerbated by oil surge and tired bearings and journals.
drivetrain is good, braking systems on later cars reliable, though load compensators can seize and rear calipers can be troublesome to bleed.
rear beams are very long lasting on the 405.

"always been more of a VW guy" but liking the pugs = VW ENGINE CONVERSION I've been following your build man, its epic and if funds/my mechanical know how allowed I'd be very temped. Surely the 405 has a slightly bigger engine bay than the 205 as well so fitting might be easier? The other issue down under though is the lack of 20v Turbo doner cars, Mk4 Golf GTI's command high dollar, Cupra R's don't exist and Audi's are pricey too.

To be fair at 155hp you don't really need more power!

It's 130 kmph maximum speed limit in Aus isn't it? The engine used to sing between 160 and 200kmph. One of the longest unrestricted autobahn sections here. That was a few years ago, and now I reckon you'd be flat out making that racket in your 80s sports saloon and get passed by a family in a new diesel Skoda estate!
