Evening all, I've finally bought one of my "dream" cars. Always wanted a blue Royale - when I was 15 the local jeweller had a new blue Royale saloon and I was hooked. It only took another 35 years before I bought the one below. The original 2.8 carb engine and three speed auto have been replaced with a 3.0 injection and four speed auto from a later Senator. Body wise it's very good apart from the paintwork which needs looking at. Very little rust. Mechanically again very good-exhaust wants looking at and it feels like one o the front wheels is loose.
Will take it for an MOT in the next few weeks to see what it fails on and take it from there. Plans are to smoke around in it gradually restoring as I go along.

Lovely cars! Awesome build quality for Vauxhall. My dad had one when I was a kid, it was a silver saloon with red interior, he always kept it immaculate and it seemed so cool after the Volvo 264 GLE he had before. Wish I could find another like his.

Thanks Phil!
Am going to get some new tyres on the original alloys next week and patch up the exhaust (blow from one of the centre boxes). Then I'll take it for an MOT and see what happens. Want to get it on the road ASAP.
Regards
Steve

Good morning all, Just a quick update. MOT - two pieces of welding and front brake pads- will be done 1st week Jan. Other progress Thanks for the advice! Progress so far! (not a lot!) 1-New prop centre bearing and carrier ordered in a bid to stop vibration. 2-Replaced passenger electric window motor-worked but then found the remainder of the window guide channel Need to find a likewise piece from the scrappy. 3-Got the central locking half working-got a new door loom on the way. 4-Removed rust from the inner frames of the doors-will grind out and epoxy. Will then spray dinotrol into doors. 5-Drivers door lock barrel had snapped-replaced it with a later Senator one-had to do quite a bit of fabrication inside the door-but it now locks. 6-Rear gearbox seal is slightly leaking-new one on the way. Plans after MOT in Jan-eliminate all vibration (hopefully) and start replacing all suspension bushes. Will paint the suspension with Black epoxy as I go along. Will also rub down and paint front valence. Onwards and upwards! Steve

Nice one, I saw this on ebay and thought it looked like an excellent car for someone. Love the early interiors on these, and with injection and a 4 speed box it should be pretty useable too.

Latest update. Car going for an MOT on Tuesday-needs two small patches welded underneath. To make it easier (and cheaper!) I removed the rear carpets and loosened the fronts. Also having the rear gearbox seal changed and a new prop centre bearing and carrier put on. Brother also made some wheel centre caps for me - I'll get a smaller Vx logo-but ok for now! Will report back when I get the car back! Cheers Steve

I had a long-running thread on here for my black 2.8 saloon (tan interior). Good luck with it. I loved mine when it was on-song but getting parts was a pain when I needed it as my daily driver.
Exhaust parts were particularly hard to find. Someone on here gave me a back box (NOS ?) but it turned out to be for the Monza so should fit your coupe if you're interested.
Interesting about the 3.0 Senator conversion as you could get 3.0 Royales but they are rare.

As far as I know it was the last 96 Royales that had the 3.0 on injection, guess they ran out of 2.8 engines by then! I had the last Royale ever built a few years ago, a red coupe with the 3.0 and the series 2 Monza interior. So late it even had a blitz badge on the tailgate because they'd run out of Vauxhall ones

Must've been Senator type plus I know some of them had the plastic 'lens', instead of the metal plinth,on the rear. My black Royale was once owned by Practical classics and the guy who ran it also had a 3.0 black saloon. I knew they were rare but din't realise it was only 96 cars. There was a silver 3.0 saloon on Ebay within last year or so...

Hello all, Car now MOT'd-had a few patches welded, new brake pads, centre propshaft bearing and carrier and gearbox oil seal . Came to £300 including the MOT. Now the hard work begins! Will now replace the bushes at the front (I have 2 sets) and start the long haul of removing the surface rust from suspension and epoxying it. The front valence will also be rubbed down with a flapdisk and epoxyed. Looking like I will need an exhaust so may look at stainless-any recommendations?
Will keep posted!

Hi Steve, Congratulations on the new M,O,T I got my stainless exhaust from MIJ Performance in Walsall, i think I paid £395 from down pipes to back box and haven't had any issues with it and that was about 4years ago.

Good morning all. A few problems on the Royale. Went out in it this morning-brakes felt a little spongy (new pads on the front). Drove about 12 miles no issues-got home - went to drop my brother off and brake peddle went to the floor and engine cut out. Engine will now not idle-brakes seem better when throttle held to enable it to run. I suspected an air leak -but cannot find any-I took the servo hose off and blocked the pipe off the manifold-but still would not idle. Only thing I noticed when pulling the bonnet after it cut out was the brake fluid was quite high (I drained a little off). Any thoughts most welcome!! Steve

As you say it's bound to be some sort of leak as it won't idle and the servo/braking is affected.
You say you did 12 miles. Was that just on that day or was it first 12 miles since getting the MoT done?
