After driving many cars with wing mounted mirror I can assure you they are a waste of time compared to door mounted so should be regarded as a negative modification on a modern car - other than as a bit of chrome on top of the wing  |

They look cool. I've not driven mine, but sitting in the drivers seat, you can't see much behind with the fender mirrors. I'm probably going to have to fit a 5 panel wink mirror to the roll cage.

I've a pair of NOS, boxed, "bullet" wing mirrors - that are remote controlled ! Not electric but three Bowden cables that go to a joystick that is mounted below dash. |

Car of this style and age I would opt for mirrors that mount to the door frame.

fender mirrors!!
come on they called wing mirrors
they were big in the 60s,70s but
the view out of them was rubbish but they did help your wings rot or patina as its now called.

I don´t care about a possible bad rear view, that´s why I will mount them only in addition to door mirrors. Having them alongside door mirrors will defeat the point. All of the ubercoolstyle scenepoints will be deducted by the door ones and it'll end up looking cluttered and confused. You'll want one of these:  IMO of course |

Some self whoring. Napoleon Bacca fender mirrors on mine: Pictures by our very own Nik da Greek Lucky7   And the same Bacca mirrors on a Luce RX4  Love that Luce so much. They come up on Yahoo Japan from time to time, go for about £500-600 |

If you go for door mirrors as well as the wing mirrors, your car will look at cluttered as my Lada (see above). It just doesn't work. Stick to door mirrors only |

I disagree about them being rubbish. They are brilliant but only when they have convex glass in them. Flat glass does give too small a range of vision but with convex glass you can adjust them to give a great wide angle view.
I think wing mirrors were often a dealer fitted option in the UK through the '50s and '60s as there is not always consistency with where they are mounted on similar cars and some have none at all.

My P6 has them as well as one door mirror. I'm intending on swapping them around, as one of them goes quite far out, and one of them points almost straight up. They don't adjust, and I'm positive that if I swap them around I'll actually be able to see something out of the left one, because at the moment I can't see ****! I'm too short! All I can really see in the right one is the door mirror!  |

The mirrors adjust on the stems, but the stems are quite different. One is probably 80 degrees and one is more like 45 degrees. All the stems do is wobble about on rubber mountings, not adjust. So I figure if I swap them left to right I will have the taller mirror on the left and maybe I'll be able to see it without sitting up out of my seat like a meerkat  |

 One of the first things i think my dad did was fit the mirrors, he even had extention arms that were used for towing, making the arms twice as long, looked silly when they were fitted. When i drove it i just couldnt get used to them, you get used to focusing on where they should be. |

Because they can actually work very well and mean you don't have to take your eyes very much off the road ahead to look in them. So it is not at all 'obviously better' the other way. Except, I will concede, in being able to adjust them while sitting in the car. |

Sorry, I worded it poorly. The mirrors adjust on the stems, but the stems are quite different. One is probably 80 degrees and one is more like 45 degrees. All the stems do is wobble about on rubber mountings, not adjust. So I figure if I swap them left to right I will have the taller mirror on the left and maybe I'll be able to see it without sitting up out of my seat like a meerkat There are no rubber mounts - the stems mount to the wing with a spring so they should always remain "tight". You slacken (doubtful due to corrosion - steel nut on alloy stem base!) the securing nut under the wing to adjust the angle. I suspect the spring has rusted to the point where it's broken or one of the alloy parts that it presses against have corroded hence they wobble about. You can see the spring here -  There should be a plastic or rubber shroud covering the spring to protect it from element but this goes missing over the years. Sorry but am betting when you try to remove them that you'll find the stems are beyond saving - unfortunately this is quite normal after a few years. Another thing wing mirrors are wonderful for is a mud trap so if you remove the mirror stems clean and paint the area are it'll probably be rusty. It's not uncommon for the rust to get to the point where the mirror will easily rip out of the wing if you try to move the stem (which it should if spring is still sound) BTW Love the P6. We used my late father-in-laws M reg V8 in Tobacco Brown as out wedding car in 1980 |
