Hey guys
I am looking to buy a car tonight.
Although it is very roadworthy with an MOT it is currently Sorn. It has also been off of the road for a few months and no longer insured.
It is 2 miles from my house along quiet 30mph residential.
Driving it would be illegal because I wouldnt intend to tax/insure it tonight (it needs work and will be in my garage for however long it takes)
But could I legally tow it home? Hazards on / Tow rope from my brothers car?
Cheers

Not on a rope, you may get away with a solid bar or A frame as it then becomes a trailer in effect. Be better to beg/ borrow a trailer for a couple of hours

^^as above^^
Although I have personally done the tow rope thing to mine when it was sorn, no mot or insurance and I didn't get told off, but I think I just got lucky. Plus it was around 4 years ago, so there wasn't as much strictness as there is now

As I understand it, the tyres aren't allowed to touch the road unless you're on trade plates.

Used to be if all tyres were on the floor it had to be Taxed Dollies got around that but that leads to a whole other load of issues using one as lots of people say they are illegal except for use by recovery professionals.

In the eyes of the Law, an a-framed car has to be fully legal. To class it as a trailer it would have to weigh under 750kg or be braked if above.

If any wheels are on the floor, it needs to be either fully legal (tax, MoT, insurance) - or very, very small.
If you're driving to a pre-booked MoT, you don't need test or tax - but it still needs to be roadworthy (ie brakes work, legal tyres correctly inflated, and it's not dripping brake fluid or with pieces of bodywork hanging off, and lights working and reflectors intact). And it needs to be insured.
Easy way is to find a friendly guy with trade plates, or someone you know with third party cover ("driving other cars") - check the small print about whether they'd need it to be MoT'd, some do, some don't.

A car with no Mot needs to gave at least one axle off the rd, ie suspended tow.
The lack if Mot cannot be used as a refusal for insurance, however if its in an unroadworthy condition/ complete shed, then thats another kettle of fish!

You could get a day insurance and tax it on the 1 month direct debit option, then cancel it. That way you'll only really be £50 down and won't have to worry about the law!
I'd just tow it on a bar normally but as it has MOT, I'd probably just fork out.

If stopped what are you going to say to Police officer about why towing a car in working order with valid MOT ? As others say insure (add to your existing policy for one day ?)to drive or use A frame / trailer. If you do tow then ensure the towing vehicles number is displayed on the towed car and it's proper number obscured - I used Gaffer tape when A framing.

Legalities aside I'd be inclined to figure the odds of getting caught or some other fool causing you to crash and if negligible just drive it home quietly and try not to draw attention to myself. Of course UK legalities are quite different to NZ so my opinion might not be worth much to you. We don't have compulsory insurance here so if the car has a wof (mot) and reg then we're sweet.

Not having insurance isn't just worrying about having an accident, it's a criminal offense and carries large fines and 6-8 points on your license. The risk of being picked up on ANPR is much greater than it used to be. For the sake of a £25 Day Insure policy its just not worth it.

Just get it recoverd, should be £40 max for 2 miles. If you are towing it, Ive heard it's worth having a few mates in convoy behind

IIRC you can't tax it on a one day insurance. Because the insurance is not entered on the MID and it needs to be to tax it, even ordinary insurance takes a few days.

Insure it, drive it home... even in these days of computerised everything there is a delay between you doing what you have to and Plod recieveing the info. I know...... (he wasn't happy.... ;-) )

even in these days of computerised everything there is a delay between you doing what you have to and Plod recieveing the info odd that it can take a few days to go ON the system / MID that its insured, but as soon as the policy ends or you change vehicle, it comes off in a second!
