Look, I don't like to moan and groan and be Mr Negative but, perhaps, the following will allow some of you to give this mob a very wide berth ( if you havent already done so) when it comes to getting insurance for your classic. Ive recently sold my old Mercedes and, because its a very good idea to, I rang up my insurers, Carole 'money grabbing b******s Nash to cancel my policy, a policy that was seven months in. A very nice lady subsequently informed me that i was required to pay a cancellation fee of £50........................ Yeah, and trees have tits. Anyway, as this is the very first time i have ever been required to pay a cancellation fee when cancelling a classic car policy I thought it may be prudent to stick the knife into these Dick Turpins and hope they get syphillis or something. Seriously, its not overly cheap having this kind of hobby as it is, just think on, don't use them. I wont. Oh, ok, sometimes we all have to pay something but FIFTY POUNDS!!!!!!! Dear God!!!

I think you'll find this is common practice with most insurers to be honest. ;-)

Never had it before, even with them when Ive sold on a car. I know it happens but, seriously, £50 is taking the wee wee. This is the thing, If I had let the policy lapse i would have not been charged, however, If the new owner has an accident and their are claims involved it will count against me too, not that many people realise that. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't. The right thing to do is cancel but, on the basis that they have a full years wodge out of me and havent had to weigh out on a claim, they STILL come back and decide that they want to screw their customer for a further £50 by just removing me from the system. I'm not saying that its not uncommon but, nearly eight months into the policy, charging £50 is just wrong. One of lifes lessons there, you need to ask what the cancellation fees are before you take out a policy. I got all the whistles and bells with this mob, TBF, way cheaper than anybody else too but, obviously, too cheap so they make up any shortfalls by robbing people blind.

Did they refund you the remaining months of the policy if paid up front?

Most classic policies are like this, my previous one I just let run until the year was up. Tho I think there was only 3 or 4 months left. Its always in the small print or they tell you over the phone. Well that is in my experience...

You would have thought they would be grateful for letting them know and they no longer have the risk of insuring that car and so they should happily cancel your policy for you, for FREE!
I know most insurers are starting to do this now and it is a bit silly in my opinion after all it must just be a click of a button and probably selecting something from a drop down list.

Did they refund you the remaining months of the policy if paid up front? I did pay up front and, to be fair, I wasn't expecting them to, I was fine with it. My daughter works for Flux so I'm aware of the whole admin charge con, I simply wasn't expecting to be told Id have to cough up Fifty big ones so long into having the Policy. The joke Is my Lotus is insured with them and, come the renewal in November, I wont be going back to them, no matter what. Thats massively thick of them, try and gain £50 and lose three times that when I don't renew. Hey Ho.

I don't see why you're blaming Carole Nash since you took out the policy and agreed to their terms and conditions. Maybe you should have read the policy details which are provided before you took the policy out in the first place. Don't agree with the terms don't buy the policy, simple!

Its nothing to do with how long you have held the policy, one day to 11 months it will be the same, its an admin charge which you say you knew about and it costs them money to cancel your policy. nearly all insurers charge to cancel or make changes.

I'm fully aware of admin charges, however, they haven't charged me previously when I have cancelled a policy and I consider £50 to be excessive. If people consider that £50 is a perfectly reasonable sum to pay then that's their prerogative. I don't.

Ibtl. Standard insurance fees. It happens and you clearly should have checked Ts and Cs. Have a Nash...Metropolitan. I'm pretty sure the oily bits are slightly altered from factory standard.

Err why didn't you transfer the policy to the Lotus OK you'd have to pay the admin charge but you wouldn't waste all of the remaining policy, or am I missing something?

Is there a point to this thread? *n None whatsoever, well apart from hoping that those people out there who are not sanctimonious, pious geniuses when it comes to understanding the ins and outsmotor insurance, will now be suitably informed that some insurance companies out there treat cancellation fees as another way of ripping a hole in the a**e of their customers by charging an excessive amount to cancel. Amen.
