Ermm, Bit of an impulse buy this one
So the backstory.. I had an XJ40, I liked the cruisery bargeness of it but couldn't live with the sub-20 average mpg. So I sold it and bought my 9-3 Aero, which is plenty economical but missing that 'cool factor'
So I started thinking about what big engined cars I could run as a daily which would give me at least 20mpg average, got looking at the E38 7 series as the smaller engined ones can be quite economical. I was looking at 735i's as I fancied a V8. My criteria was to find a facelift model with black leather interior and a dark exterior colour, which I could use as my daily to replace the Saab. But I was only going to replace the Saab in January when the insurance ran out on it etc.
Then I went on Gumtree and saw this very cheap, SWB, pre facelift, 750i.... Now as much as I like V8's, a V12 is next level cool Plus it was cheap enough to be able to keep the Saab alongside, so the economy aspect is covered
I spotted it middle of last week, somehow convinced myself that buying a cheap V12 was a good idea and hatched a plan to collect it. Now, I'm in Coventry, and I was planning to go home to see my parents in Ipswich at the weekend, the car was in Maidstone... The plan was to train down to Maidstone, check over the car, buy it and drive it up to Ipswich. If it was no good, then I'd have to get a train back to Coventry and just drive to Ipswich the next day in the Saab
So theres a pic of it from the day I got it
So its a pre facelift 750i SWB which is fairly rare (I'm not a huge fan of the looks of the LWB). its done 198k miles and has some reasonable history with it. The amount of extras on the thing is insane!! More on that in a sec
So I bought it, put some fuel in it, and drove back to Ipswich, no problems at all. I even reset the trip when I filled up and recorded 29mpg! Probably because at motorway speed, the engine is barely ticking over
Have a few more pics
So as you can see, its certainly not wanting for equipment! I did a quick VIN decoder and it seems that it was optioned up pretty well when it was new, although the TV isn't working, the phones don't appear to be connected up and the Sat Nav is apparently missing a disc. Looking at the sat nav and cd changer area in the boot, it seems as though there are wires where something used to be connected up so some investigation to be done there perhaps! Although obviously the TV and Sat Nav would have to be updated to modern standards I've also read that these cars can be upgraded to Bluetooth so maybe something to look into
So, Plans?
Errrr, I haven't really got any this was a total impulse purchase and I'm really happy with the condition of the car considering the price. They do look good on 18's so perhaps thats a route I'll go down in the future. For now I'm just enjoying the V12 power!
