so what do you think makes us different? are we REALLY that different? the 'general public' that we critise, the anonyplebs, are we some of those? it occurs to me that everyone outside of a certain loop, no matter what loop, is the general public to someone else. Everyone except firefighters are the g.p. non-vegetarians are g.p. people who don't have a virgin credit card are the g.p. they aim at. see? anyway, my questions are these: are we truly different on all aspects? and secondly, if we had the means, would we live any differently? so, with a short montage of pics, I will demonstrate my life in pix, contrasted against a perceived "normality" for a 21 year old. ME: I am 21, eldest of 3 boys and one little sister, separated parents, we all live with our mum, in relative countryside, 2 miles from small town, 4 miles from market town. I work 15 miles away in halfords, earning typical wage slightly above min., and i'm normal weight/height etc. NORMAL: pretty much the same huh? HOUSE: ME: NORMAL: FOOD: ME: NORMAL: HOBBIES/INTERESTS: ME: NORMAL: MUSIC: ME: NORMAL: TRANSPORT: ME: NORMAL: MY MUM: NORMAL MUM: WHAT I WAS LEFT TO SCHOOL IN: WHAT NORMAL CHILDREN WERE LEFT TO SCHOOL IN: OUSIDE THE HOUSE: ME: NORMAL: TODAYS PLANS: ME: NORMAL: would I change any of it? what if I had more money? would it change then? are my lifestyle choices influenced by money, or taste, or parental influence, or what defines the way we approach life? your thoughts.

if more money was available then i reckon you would have all that, but on a larger scale, with potentially better things on the go. i.e. improvements to the current cars. being a student i have no money, being lazy i have no job, therefore cant really have much hobbies except the main one that has been my whole lifestyle since i was 13, rollerblading. for me at the moment apart from musical interest and definately hobbies I'm normal. hobbies for me: music for me: www.myspace.com/triviumtodays plans, play on comp games/browse internet/spend time with gf/talk to housemates. live in a terraced house/student accomodation. eat curse word processed food because its all i can afford. walked to school because I'm not lazy and it was only half an hour away. if i had money things would be way different. i wanna live in the countryside whone money allows, drive an imp, have a weekend (very fast) imp, gotta love imps. would spend less time on the computer, more time faffing /learning about cars. and i would probably skate more

I'd be normal if I was in my 60s, but sadly I'm 22 and it is apparently deeply unacceptable to spend my weekends reading up on cars, buying brown ties and watching Westerns.
If I was rich, I think all that would happen is that I'd have about 30 old rubbish cars instead of 3.

to be honest i would call your music taste normal. this normal thing all seems to be subjective based on peoples points of view. ive found the more that you meet people you find that you are more or less the same as everyone else. its just your interests and things that differ. it would be fair to say everyone has fears and insecurities, probably just as much as the next person. its probably normal not to be the same as the next person as far as your interests and tastes are concerned. its just some things have a bigger following than most. i guess thats what deems things to be normal. whatever appeals to the lowest common denominator. for example - football. now thats normal///

I think most of us are some measurement of 'normal' just not stupid enough to wedge big cash on new cars etc and give much of a damn what people think! I do wonder, if my alternative ways hold me back though. hmm Washing a crappy old van in the heavy rain, that cant be 'normal' ;D

I don't think I'm that "different". I own a house on a mortgage, I work for the government, sort-of, I'm thining about my retirement, I'm worried about my health, I'm moaning about a new housing/shopping developmemt which is being built 3 miles away, I wonder which is the best school to try get my daughter into, I enjoy foreign holidays...
I have a hobby...
Theres some people think that liking like a traveller and owning a dozen non-working cars makes them the white heat of a revolutionary lifestyle...
I've had the pleasure of meeting a few truely "different" people in my life. I am very suburban in comparison.
As said, everybody sees like in terms of "them and us". I bet most hobbyests see themslves as a persecuted minority like we often seem to. Go talk to people who hunt, shoot, have powerboats, narrow boats, off-roaders, cyclists, steam traction enthusiasts, market gardenners, alotmenters, etc.
I'm feeling mellow today. Another day I might tell you how "normal people" are the curse of the world and such... But I don;t think these drone-consumers are actually the "normal people". I think that the more traditionally English person still outnumbers them. For now.

Maybe its not about being normal or "different", maybe all these things are just down to a little bit of extra open-mindedness or confidence, I`ve never tried to be different to anyone, I just find it hard to say no to anything interesting sounding that gets blown into my path - whether its an old car or some activity, passtime, work opportunity or whatever - then work through the consequences/complications later and get whatever it is to slot neatly or perhaps un-neatly in with everything else.
Most people look at things and see the hassle first and decide not to bother with that old MK2 Escort or that canoe or that Gibson SG copy afterall, and the difference between doing something that takes a bit of working at or marks you out a bit and not doing it is probably only a gnat`s cock hair, you either think "yeah f*ck it" or "nah, f*ck that".

surprisingskoda, i'm with you 100% on this but i think i love this girl and i wish she was my hobby!!! I'm sure most people on here get the same looks as i do for having any number of "old wrecks" in various stages of disrepair outside the house. Only yesterday my own brother gave out to me about my cars.....i wouldn't mind my mother and father love all these things. He asked me why i don't just buy a new car instead of "pricking around with this old sh1te"!!! Music is the same, i cant stand most stuff on the radio so i don't use a radio. My clothes are always in question but only until "fashion" dictates that other people should wear flared jeans etc...... I was out last night and my friend parked his brand new vauxhall corsa vxr beside the GT6......most young fellas were crowded around the corsa but once i started the GT6 they all nearly shat themselves.....followed by a sideways exit had my mate looking like a nonce. Fashions come and go, style stays forever

I pick and choose. I appear very normal, often deliberately...but at the same time I make most of my decisions wisely rather than simply follow the crowd. I don't like 'normal' people thinking I'm not normal, I like them to get to know me and find out that I'm not quite what they expected...in a good way. I've even got a Volvo estate! ps. I don't live in a castle. pps. Cars in every post please!

Leigh, that bit you wrote there is spot on, and i'm not even onabout the girl (though she's nice). I guess its that extra effort like Vic says. why do i spend my time and money buying/collecting curse word for old cars when i could just be simple, go to pub all the time or run something sensible and new (and do teh same with evey other aspect in my life). Its often loads more hassle. If a project does not work out. some people get to gloat, like they are better for carrying out a straight forward good-regular-job that they have been promoted in, a Nice Big new house (the bank owns), and a New Shiney car (they don't own) etc. when your car works out and its cheap/fun/etc they (some people) get annoyed you have created something decent but some don't congratulate they point out rust or snigger. Keep saving those rusty old souls

I only know this for sure...........
If I won the lottery tomorrow (I don't play but just say), I know for 100% that my taste in cars would not change. All the extra money would enable me to do would be to buy loads of tat rather than just one at a time, I would need a massive garage to take them! Oh and I would still listen to the same music (Pitchshifter - www. the pinnical for one of britains best bands IMO)
Normality is just what the adverts on the telly tell you it is!

pps. Cars in every post please! sorry. I owe you about three in this thread then. I can't remember who I'm responding to now, but... I do what I do. I dress how I dress and I dye my hair and whatever and thats just down to what I like. Sometimes I get stick and sometimes I don't. Even "normal" people get into fights though. So what? I think the thing is that its just annoying when people who don't understand and don't want to understand just mock because they can't empathise with "us" because theres nothing they do which allows them a common experiance.

and yeah, if I was a millionaire my taste in cars would be the same. I'd just own more of the expensive ones I like and I'd have them all fixed/finnished.
