"Average" cars beating posh super (sport) cars

I remember reading a road test report by an Australian motoring journalist on the XY GTHO when they were new. It seems that the boys slept in on the last day of the test and woke to find themselves in a country town 200 miles from the dealership with a bare two hours until they were due to give the car back. They made it.

Same truck vs Corvette, same problem with the launch. I wonder if they smoke the tyres on the cars as spectators at a "truck rodeo" might not like the cars to win?

The truck runs around 2000hp (according to the internets).

When the story was published the photo taken showing speedo at 140 mph & rev counter on the limiter was doctored to look they'd only redlined in 3rd gear.
That article was contributing factor in the big supercar scare leading to Ford Holden & Chrysler cancelling their up coming Bathurst rockets
