Bit of a basic one but i want to make sure i'm doing it right!
I've got the head off a friends polo, and due to belt-cover mods we have no timing mark on the bottom end.
Am I right in saying that if i get piston no.1 to it's highest point, the engine will be at TDC? If so i'll just make a new mark.
Thanks

Hi, in theory yes, but in reality you could get maybe 10 degrees or more of crank rotation and not see the piston appear to move. So, turn the crank so as it comes up to TDC place a nut or something on the piston and a straight edge across the the block when the nut touches the straight edge make a permanent mark on the crank pulley and a temporary mark on the cover. Then turn the crank past TDC until the nut is just touching the straight edge again, make another temporary mark on the cover. That is two marks which show the piston at the same place in the bore, so true TDC is halfway between, make another permanent mark on the cover then turn the crank until the two marks are aligned. Hope this makes sense.

Also assuming you're timing it, then you will also want to take the cam/rocker cover off to watch the valves to make sure it's on the inlet stroke..

It will either be TDC'ish d or 180* out.
The piston will be at the top on the bang and blow!

Got this done today, used the trick with the Nut and the Straight edge and found that the mark I already made was spot on.
I then put the head on, complete with cam and already lined up with its own mark, and bolted it down. Had to make a small rotation on the camshaft as the tensioner threw the marks out a touch, but it's all sorted now.
Thanks fellas.

Hi, can also be done with the head on if needed. Remove spark plug, turn engine just before TDC, insert rod down until it touches piston CROWN, mark rod against head, mark cover, turn engine past TDC until mark on rod is in same place against head, mark cover again, true TDC is again halfway between marks.
