My local garage have just taken delivery (via RAC) of a 05 plate Audi A6 2.5tdi all road. Its a great car, balmoral green, black heated leather only 118k miles. The problem is that the cam belt broke and the engine ate itself. Transported to the garage by RAC.
The current owner doesnt think that its worth repairing, but i have fallen in love with it.
My mechanic has asked me to budget £3k for an engine replacement plus water pump, dmf, clutch etc - its a manual. Can the damage just be repaired?
Can anyone advise, or even better do this for me - obviously for payment.....
I will upload the pictures of the car once i have fed my kids.

I have seen 130pd TDI done and it kind of looked straight forward, little underpowered in standard form, but remapped more than ample. I would not consider it if the car in question is an auto, as the box is not renowned for its reliability. The 4 pot of is more reliable than the v6 and gives better mpg's too. Fancy doing this too, have looked into it before.

I think £3k is a bit too much, as you can possibly get current one repaired for less. To start with, you'll be looking at one of these click engine code dependant, then set of valves+head gasket set+ fitting and skimm, timing belt kit-water pump, obvious service bits and whatever else it my need (dmf clutch). With one of those I'll budget around £600 for injection pump control module repair as they like to fail aswell. If you look after it after all that it should give around 120k trouble free motoring. Nice cars and lovely to drive I would love to get another one.

I don't think it is. 4k from a dealer maybe. Before you do anything check Autotrader and eBay etc, there'll always be the odd manual one for sale. I'm not knocking the car by the way, if that's what you want get one.

So, you'll have 3-3.5k to play with/repair it before it becomes bad value. Now say, you have it repaired for 2k, that's a 3k car that you've taken a risk on along with organising it to be repaired, that's now worth as a private sale tops 3,750. Just my take on it. Offer 500.

There are so many Audi quattro's with various engine and gearboxes I'm sure some kind of Audi forum will tell you which engine/box code fits, then source one from fleabay and fit? Got to be less than paying a garage to do the same thing..

£3k is a little much but I guess if that covers comeback then it may not be too bad; I'd have thought £2k tops but I am basing it on a car I have not worked on before, so my cost is purely academic. When I wished to get effectively 2 head gaskets changed onto my Mondeo V6 I was quoted £1-1.2k with some of my known mechanics refusing to touch it due to dealing with Ford V6s previously ; I have to admit that it was a royal pain to work on! Personally if you do love the car I'd get a good one from elsewhere. It would be a similar cost and possibly cheaper in the long run. Will it take some searching? Probably, but it would still be far less hassle than the above . As you may be able to tell, I have switched my share of engines and contemplated doing it over the years, more recently with me going the other way where possible (keeping good what I have).

It's funny you should post that as a friend of mine bought one of those v6 TDI engines and fitted a bosch VE mechanical pump from a cummins engine to it so it's completely mechanical (no electronic injection).... Then it can be retrofitted into anything without worrying about ecu / loom swapping!

My brother had a 2008 golf diesel , spat a rod , engine replaced with a SEAT diesel from one of the big breakers for £1600 . They simpley orderded the engine , arrives on pallet and chucked it in . About £800 for the engine i think .

You're forgetting that not everyone is spanner wielding, nor have the premises or the time . I think this was discussed some time ago, but no garage is to going to be uber cheap at doing an engine swap, given the potential interim issues that can follow. I am sure those who have done engine swaps on this parish have said the same thing.
