Well the other week i had a bit of an accident in my 2.8 4motion golf, resulting in me having a knackered shell, but perfectly good running gear underneath. I also have a mk3 Capri shell without an engine (there is a v8 but i don't know if its any good and if it is i think the hillman would like it more) So this got me thinking, which led to a few measurements being taken, all of which say DO IT! (mainly because there is only a 20mm diferance between the capri's wheelbase and the golf!) Does anyone know of any build threads or people swapping 4motion stuff into another shell? Its always good to start with some research and i havent built my garage yet so itll be homework for the evenings  James |

Might be easier to transplant the mechanicals into a Corrado. It's been done many times so plenty of articles on what's needed out there.

I very much like the idea behind this but you might face a few problems squeezing a transverse engine into a car made for longitudinal arrangements. Front wheel to bulkhead length is quite different which may also cause headaches. Wheelbase shouldn't drive your decision, props can be shortened or lengthened cheaply and easily. I would suggest finding a different FWD car to plop the lot in, something more random... If you fancy a 4wd capri, it would probably be easiest to use sierra 4wd stuff - also available fairly cheaply at the mo  |

WHY CHANGE THE LADS MIND???
Stick with the Capri and sell all the 4Motion drive gear for the front of the car,
With the funds buy the front end 4motion transmission from a B5 vr5 or Audi A4 Quarto and this will get you your correct engine layout,
You can buy adaptor plates from VAG to fit the VR6 onto many other inline transmission.
cut out the entire rear floor of the golf and invite that into the rear of the Capri fit a role cage for extra strength.
Not an easy project by a long shot but far far more interesting than another FWD.....

Not an easy project by a long shot but far far more interesting than another FWD... That sounds like great fun, and I love reading mad build threads like that. It is several degrees of difficulty higher than a simple swap within the same vehicle platform though. Cutting out all the rear axle mounts from a monocoque shell and grafting in something different is not a suitable project for everyone. There are serious legal issues involved, including an IVA/SVA test, Q plate and whatever else is required in the UK, if I understand correctly. In Australia you would need to spend probably $10 grand on engineering reports to get it complianced, which would include bringing the car up to modern safety and emissions standards and basically registering it as a new one-off car. It's not something you could recommend to a person who is asking on a forum how hard the swap is! The Caddy, on the other hand, should more or less bolt in using standard VW parts. It would be a very cool car when finished. Who knows, I might even start people thinking in different directions. |

You would still need to fit the 4motion rear floorpan, exactly the same as the Capri,replacing the full floorpan is a straight forward procedure... Bolt in?? Were did the Caddy idea even come from ?? He already has the Capri ( a retro ride? ) He has a complete golf 4motion running gear, He is asking about a 4motion Capri, What the hell are you talking about Australia for this is England not Australia..... |

The main issue that I think i'm going to face will be the room in front of the front wheels that will be taken up by the engine (as said above) The audi quattro gearbox idea would put the engine in the right orientation, but it would also put the engine further forward than the transverse box on the VR6 engine i have now (i had a 2.8 a4 in the past and toyed with the idea of making a f1 style car with the engine/gearbox!) James To convert a fwd vw to 4wd you will need to change the rear floorpan , Capri ,caddy ,golf estate etc etc etc the 4motion floor pan will need changing it caters for a different fuel tank prod bigger exhaust haldex shafts the lot and I think you will be surprised how little amount of space up front you will need..... |

Is the entire floor pan on a mk4 different on a 4 motion?
As all the Mk5 platform car's can take the 4 motion set up, which I didnt realise until my Golf was on the ramps and I had a look around, you just need the tank & 1 bracket welding on.
I like the idea of a 4 motion Capri though!

The 4motion boot floor is three inches higher,loads different but don't let that put you off its a pretty straight forward procedure more than do able on the Capri....

We never got the Caddy in Australia until 2006. I could never cut up something that new, it would be the newest car I'd ever owned!
