I am on a constant lookout for a 5 speed for my 76 (1500) MG Midget.
Conventional wisdome would say swap in a Ford Type 9 transmission, however, I live in Canada and, they only came to this country for a short time in the Merkur XR4ti. As such they are REALLY rare and typically expensive. They are also 30 or so years old by now.
That said, in Canada, our easy import rules for vehicles starts at 15 years instead of many country's 25 years. So, I sort of have access to reasonably priced mini trucks and JDM products. I just realized that the Mini Trucks of that era (Suzuki Carry, Honda Acty, Bedford Rascal etc) are RWD and have decent ratios.
Unfortunately there is almost no information about the actual transmissions on the interwebnet so, I am turning to you a truly international knowledgeable community to find out more.
1. Has anyone done this? Is it doable?
2. Do any of these transmissions have a removeable bell housing?
3. Does anyone know what HP they are rated for? Remember my MG is currently only about 60 HP.
4. Anyone know about clutch sizes or splines? Are they hydraulic clutches or cable?
In addition to the obvious benefit of RWD, the appeal here is size - assuming they are small, the less surgery on the car itself the better.
Oh and I am open to any other ideas.
Thanks all and cheers!
