I hadn't thought to post about my 'other Uno' so as I'm feeling a bit bad for not sharing sooner I decided I'd make a thread. You know how it goes, a casual look on Auto Trader usuually leads to one thing!! An unexpected purchase I was supposed to be buying something Astra sized and diesel in the run up to Christmas, to save driving my MK1 through winter but seen a low mileage mk2 Uno I.E an decided that all those idea's of being practical should be thrown out of the window!! The Uno was a little battered on the passenger side, the elderly lady who owned it previously had an argument with a post and knocked the bumper off it's mounting. She decided to trade it in for something with power steering, and traded up to a Honda from a local dealer. Subsequently it got passed onto to used car dealer in Birmingham, an that's where I got it. Turn's out the lady who owned it, lives barely 5 miles away from me!! Cracked the bumper and the headlight an indicator had also took a beating, still nothing that couldn't be fixed Couldn't resist a quick pose next to my other Uno, not very often you get a mk1 & mk2 together at the same time!! So as the winter weather was against me I threw away those horrible miss matched wheel trims for the time being, and put some spare ones from my other Uno on. Plus my brother found me a second hand indicator and headlight, whilst not brilliant at such sort notice were just the job! Also managed to get the bumper back on it's mounting, instead of dangling around!! The first job was a mini service and a good clean up, also the airbox badge and a air duct was missing from the airbox so a quick search on eBay and hey presto. Few days later these little jems turned up along with a free air freshner... The rocker cover gasket wasn't keeping oil in too well and as I couldn't be bothered I let a freind do it, so thanks to my friend's efforts the engine is now looking like new as well as not leaking oil over the driveway!! I then decided to enter a local Autotest in December with this Uno instead of using my other one, for comparrsion and just for the fact I wanted to use a different car for a change. I had so much fun, I decided to enter it again last month!!! As you can see without any lowered supension, you can get some lean on!!! And a picture with my mates tasy mk2 Escort That's it so far, I'll update the thread as soon as I've got the latest pictures sorted

Love it, loving those Autotest pics too. I had a Lancia Y10 until a few months ago, basically an Uno in drag, copious amounts of fun. Is this 4 or 5 speed?

It's the 5 speed box, ah yes the Y10 wow remember them well. Supply teacher at my school had a Y10 'Fila' edition, in white looked fantastic. Can imagine they'd be fun on the twisty stuff as you say pretty much an Uno underneath! Cheers the Uno does draw a crowd ( small crowd ) on the Autotests, but it's a lot of fun and it's great competing against the Nova's, Micra's & 205's etc..

I put up a better snap of her there mate, dunno if you can see it. I've had my fair share of cars all from varying eras etc, but this was by far in the top 3. It was just fantastic. I ended up with a Jah XJ6 after it, which I actually hated

So to bring you all right up to speed with the Uno, It's looking a little more loved but was still not quite there!!
The scratches on the wing wasn't doing it any favours.. so touched them in but the bumper was still a bit .. erm.. second hand. By chance my brother came across a local bodypanel suppliers, that had the new bumper I needed for a bargain 20 quid. And a trip down south to Brooklands for Auto Italia also turned up some new indicators for a £10.
Right time to get to work and turn this Italian stalion around... so no point mucking about and on saturday afternoon the Uno ended up looking like this!! A few rusted bolts, but nothing that gave us to much trouble luckily.
I used axle stands, although you can't see it but safety is No1 as I don't enjoy going to A&E
All the nasty rusty looking bits were delt with.
While the new paint was drying decided to replace the broken cam cover..
All looks well there at least anyway!!
Next up the grille, nothing wrong with it but the badge was a bit faded.
Quick rummage in the draw and ta da..
And then a minute later the end result.. it's the little things that make all the difference!!
So time to crack on with the main job the bumper, despite being a pattern part it lined up really well and with some new nuts and bolts was a pleasure to fit!
Now for the rest of it.
Finally we have a car again.. nearly!! Just a couple of things to refit but the wheel's were letting it down a bit, the wheel trims were only meant to be for the short term so as I'd recently purchased some wheel paint at a bike show for a bargain price.
Seemed rude not to get them looking smart again, so this is what I started with..
Rusty and horrible, definitely only fit for the skip at this point..
Centre caps aren't much better..
So a quick rub down on the caps with some wet n dry leaves me with this...
Then with the wheels it was a case of cleaning them with soapy water and a stiff brush, then a rinse before allowing them to dry. Then next up a rub them down with a wire brush, shake of all the loose paint an rusty bits. Mask off the tyres, prime and allow to dry before sparaying 2-3 coats of wheel silver. Tedious work, but well worth the effort.
The first wheel on..
Other side...
And for the final result..
Not bad hey amazing how in a weekend you can transform a car on a small budget, a few parts and some spray paint!!
Got some new number plates coming to finish it off, in the meantime the speakers decided to go pop
A trip to Halfords resulted in these beauty's, shame you can't see them where there fitted but hey ho.
Old vs New.
For less than 20 quid I'm really impressed, never really splash out much on speakers normally but an massive difference so I'll definitely upgrade the others at some point.

I ended up with a Jah XJ6 after it, which I actually hated A Lancia to a Jag talk about extremes, guess there not for everyone. Besides I bet the Lancia was better on fuel!! got the picture now looks brillant can see why it was in your top 3 There was a white one on eBay the other week, didn't see how much it went for but the first one in a while I'd seen up for sale. Never driven one myself, but imagine they are similar to a Uno/Panda or Cinquecento. I've mainly had Fiat's the odd Renault 19 and some Ford's and Peugeot and a Alfa, all been great but for some reason can't get enough of my small Fiat's!

Nice work transforming this, though keep the original plates. They look fine and modern type plates always look poo on a retro

Nice work transforming this, though keep the original plates. They look fine and modern type plates always look poo on a retro Thanks it's came together really well!! the front number plate has desorted and discoloured quite badly so if I can find a company to remake one that would be brilliant. So i'll be keeping the old ones up safe and fit the new ones just for the minute, until I can get it sorted

wow seeing that has brought back memories- my dad had one virtually the same as that, 1993 "Mambo" run out edition with colour coded bumpers and funky upholstery that looked like the lorry going to a deck chair factory had got lost and ended up at Fiat instead. He had it from new and used to take me to school in it, thankfully he used to drop me off round the corner as it was about the least cool car ever when you're 15 and all your mates dads have got Saab 9000 turbos and BMW 5ers!
I remember my dad never really liked it that much, the wiper motor burnt out on a particularly wet night on the A2 then the clutch went in the middle of town bringing half of Strood to a standstill one morning as the 13 year old me valiantly tried to push it out the way....
L692AKM where are you now? probably tin cans by now...

I remember vividly the green and purple striped seats and bright green carpet, and the funky stickers on the rear quarters. Mine was L882 RWT I think, but it suffered horribly at the hands of my 17 year old self. Bought in Sowerby Bridge for £350 with 70k and 1 lady owner, within a month I'd fitted Cinq Sporting alloys, replaced the interior with one out of a Turbo, hacked off the backbox and bodged on a Termignoni off my mates brothers R1 and of course tore off the stickers. I ran around in it for 5 months, smashed it into the back of a 206, repaired it with parts from a black mk1 in the scrapyard, and then parked it in someones front garden when the master cylinder seals failed. I then bought an AX GTi and left the Uno in my parents drive, and when I moved out a year later they scrapped it. Genuinely loved that car, it spawned my love of driving! Anyway, to the OP, yours looks very tidy!

L692AKM where are you now? probably tin cans by now... Glad it bought back some good or should I say painful memories? I did check but nothing on DVLA I'm affraid!! my mum had a Uno 1.4 Start Plus M184SWJ. Sadly no longer on the road but it got to nearly 200,000 miles, so didn't do too badly at all. The interior on that was pretty plain just a blue tartan type I think, the Mambo had a pretty lairy interior as you say so can imagine it wouldn't of done your street cred much good at 15 ha ha.. Luckily I didn't have to endure any embarrasement on the cars part as a teenager it was on the whole very reliable, most kids at my school had parents who bought Hyundai's, Vauxhalls, Rovers or Ford etc.. so the Uno fitted in and I survived school!! My dad didn't mind the Uno, but said the mirrors were to small and we should of bought a Tipo or a Montego Estate!!

Mind you if I'd had a Uno like that as my first car, I'd probably of stuck it on it's roof looking back Same here my love of driving came from my first car which was actually Panda 750L, wanted an Uno but couldn't find one so the Panda it was an besides my mum thought it would be safer than a motorbike. It wasn't fast but was quicker than my brothers friends Lada Estate, still I used to get all the jokes from friends and work mates. Like 'why did you come out in your mums car?' etc.. but didn't care it was mine and girls did actually like it!!

My mate had an L reg 1.2 Corsa at the same time, and he preferred my Uno to drive, as did I. The Corsa felt heavy and slow in comparison, understeered everywhere and had terrible brakes. The Uno felt lively, and sounded great through a bike can at 7k revs even if it wasn't actually going fast...
