Tools you have made for a specific task...

Great stuff @johnnybravo I look forward to it and hopefully a couple of project threads for your sand blaster, bead roller etc. Love the fact that before you could even start the resto you had to build a load of specialist tools.

I recall asking a friend what the torque setting was as I'd mislaid my HBOL. He said not to bother with the torque wrench and just do it as tight as I possibly could plus one full turn.

My Saab's hub nuts are 'kin tight, when my breaker (known as Excalibur) bent, I resorted to using a shorter breaker bar and jacking it up.

Unorthodox use of existing tools is probably a different thread.

Good effort, nothing wrong with that method Love the fact you named the big 5' breaker and then the Saab broke it.

Yes there's definitely another thread there "Right tool for the job" is a phrase I've heard all too often but sometimes needs must. Screwdriver's used as chisels or drifts, sockets used to insert seals the list is probably exhaustive

I've got loads of these. Splined clutch centre welded to a big spanner for locking the input shaft up when stripping gearboxes.

first half dozen i laid my hands on. i'll no doubt add more i remember them.

1. tipping tool. a little more universal this one, for forming short flanges on panels youre making up, easier than using a proper folder for short runs.


2. mk2-4 golf etc. rear caliper windback tool. brand name comes from my reaction to the price of one from that 'other' brand name....


3. f100 and similar american ford steering wheel puller. saves a damaged wheel or damaged face


4. couple of VAG diesel timing tools. ones for AAZ, other was either for 1Z or PD i cant remember now. made up by copying pictures of 'proper' ones and taking some measurements.




5. no-one will be able to guess what this is for i don't think. but if youve ever done a steering rack dogbone on pretty much any VAG(especially a b3/b4 passat or a lupo), you'll understand why i went to the trouble of making it!

did another yesterday.
super-tight space viscous fan spanner, as you have to take it off to do the timing on the pinto in my pickup without removing your hands. (the location of pinto timing marks in relation to where the dizzy is is one for the deign faults thread i think!) the fan has been bolted on to the backside of the viscous unit to shorten the assembly so it clears the rad, leaving pretty much no space to get in to undo it, so i made this-
