basically, I'm about to do my driving test and keep seeing about dash cams and saving people from stuff like loosing ncd and wrongful liability. so have been looking into buying a dash cam, because I don't really fancy splashing out £750 excess if something happens which isn't my fault. especially seeing that ill be a 17 year old in a (fairly) old, slightly modified car, so the blame will probably fall onto me regardless.
I'd like to spend around the £60 mark and was wondering if anyone has any tips/recommendation for one? the market is so saturated and i haven't got a clue what i'm looking for, other than one which is discreet
thanks!

I'd like to spend around the £60 mark ... i haven't got a clue what i'm looking for, other than one which is discreet Hi, I have been using one that clips over the rear-view mirror - very simple & discrete. It has been working for about a year but died when I rewired the power to it (maybe my fault - power "spike", or maybe just fragile?) I'm now looking for another as I like the idea of having a recording of things (near-miss / crash / "youve been framed" type stupidity!) Stuff to think about : must have automatic looping when your memory card is full should have automatic power-on (I wired an extra cigar socket that only gets power when the ignition is on) optional : G-shock sensor (to protect recent recordings after a bump) optional : GPS (to track where you've been, and at what speeds) - this might work in your favour or might not higher quality recordings need more memory, pay attention to the spec when you are buying (VGA/720/1080/HD etc) A review of the one I had is www.techmoan.com/blog/2013/1/14/hd-car-dvr-rear-view-mirror-camera.htmlIf you put the search below into your favourite auction site you'll find similar ones, prices start around £30 : ("accident","traffic","dvr") recorder mirrorMine created lots of short (5 minute) movie files, easy to join together to make 1 movie file using free software but a bit of a faff. Pics / review when you get one please

Have a look at the Mobius. I think mine was about £45, and the picture's brilliant. Also, it's more like a cheap gopro than just a dash cam - photo mode, time lapse etc.

I have a Mio MiVue 538 - bought it after looking at the Techmoan reviews of the 358 version. I had a couple of cheaper ones before and wasn't too happy with the picture and reliability.
The 538 has GPS so it records exactly where you are and your own speed.
It automatically records any bumps or emergency braking and keeps them as a separate file. You can adjust the sensitivity to avoid false recording, like going over a pothole. The only time it's triggered on mine is going over a cattle grid near Tarn Hows.
It loops over the recording so you get continuous coverage (which is pretty standard I think)
It has lifetime updates for speed and traffic cameras and you can manually add them as well. Tells you the speed of the camera and your own speed. And throws a warning beep is you're over the limit. Counts down the yards to the camera position - though you'd be better watching the road than peering at the screen at this stage!
You can manually record events to be kept as a separate record (ie it won't be recorded over later) - ie if you see an accident in front of you then you press a button and that segment is filed separately in case you want to use it as witness evidence later.
It can be left on standby in the car and will record anyone approaching the car or interfering with it when you are parked.
It has a decent sized screen on the back of it.
Picture quality is excellent, even at night.
Dislikes: Not the smallest of units One setting for speed cameras has an annoying American female voice - but can be changed for a tone warning Doesn't distinguish between speed or traffic light cameras - they are all 'speed warnings'. Playback can be very embarrassing if you sing whilst driving or have an interesting conversation with the missus and forget it's being recorded.
