Right so just swapping to the Rover 200 as my daily, swapped the insurance, done.
Now comes the tax, the prev owner has it taxed until the 1st May
But as I bought the car on Sunday, its now untaxed right?
So I go online to tax it monthly, the dvla want to charge me from the 1st April even though its the 28th
As well as the current owner paying the tax upto the 1st May, so the dvla are going to get the same month paid twice?
I think not!
Should I leave it and tax it online on the 1st May or pay £20 for 2 days?
Also just sold the metro, cancelled the direct debit, should I sorn it in case the new owner decides not to tax it? Or would that put him at ANPR risk if he leaves it until the 1st?
confusing this!

Re. the Rover, your options are to tax it which means the DVLA get April's tax twice - daylight robbery but that's how they worked the new system out. Or SORN it just to cover your back, then tax it from 1st May.
If you sold the Metro and have sent the paperwork off to the DVLA you don't need to SORN it. Doing so makes no difference to the new owner's liability re. ANPR since the fact of selling the car negates the current tax on it anyway.
It's a rotten system however you look at it.

Yeah its a bit pants
Far as I see it there will be no break in tax if i tax it on the 1st, they cant charge £20 for two days, if they tried to fine me I think any reasonable judge would agree. I'm using for work only 2 miles up the road plus anpr wouldstill see it as taxed till they get the logbook which will only have been posted yestetday.
Re the metro, they wont get the logbook untill the end of the week and my tax will run out before then.
Tbh I don't think I need to worry about a couple of days, I think they are only interested when they loose a full month, certainly they should not recieve tax twice for the same car, when you move house the council don't charge each party for a full month why should the dvla be allowed to?

Under the new guidlines and rules if you intend to drive it or park it on the road then you need to tax it from the day you take possession be that the first or last day of the month
You can't simply drive it assuming as the last keeper had it taxed you are still covered
The new scheme is a very asute marketing ploy by the dvla

confusing this! I'm struggling to understand all this confusion with the 'new' tax system, which isn't really new any more! When you buy a car you have to tax it, yes the DVLA will get the same month paid for twice but that is no different to the 'old' tax system that has been around for years. I understand that you can no longer buy the remaining tax with the car, however many people cashed in the remaining tax under the old system, not all threw it in with the sale. As another poster stated, if you have sold the metro and sent the V5 off to the DVLA accordingly there is nothing more you need to do. Yeah its a bit pants Far as I see it there will be no break in tax if i tax it on the 1st, they cant charge £20 for two days, if they tried to fine me I think any reasonable judge would agree. You are probably right, the DVLA probably won't receive (and process) the V5 from the previous owner before the end of the month, so it is likely to show up on anpr as taxed until then, however that doesn't mean you will be using it legally. However, I can assure you that if it did ever get heard before a judge they would absolutely side with the DVLA, it's either right or wrong, in this case if you haven't taxed it for april it is wrong. Judges don't have any sort of flexibility or discretion in this sort of instance, it's their job not to. In my opinion you will no doubt be absolutely fine just taxing it in a couple of days, but you should be aware that it is not correct as such. Likewise if you only wanted to insure it from the 1st/may as the previous owners insurance only runs out then, that would be equally wrong! Don't get me wrong, I'm no saint, I've just received a £50 for having tax on a car when it should be SORN (it's uninsured), d'oh! I was fully aware that I broke the rules though, I just forgot about it and didn't get round to sorting it.

All this will soon change again anyway
The dvla are working on software so that you can change ownership instantly on line when you buy a car no more sending the v5 away
They have already got a scheme in place to allow you to pass a car to trade instantly on line now
