Hi All,
For my Granada Cosworth BOB conversion I need to use a swirl pot. The (carburettor) fuel tank would otherwise allow for vapour to be sucked in long corners with the tank mostly empty.
My issues now are these:
I read everywhere that you should fill a swirl pot with a low pressure pump. Now I have two injection pumps available. Can I not use an injection pump to fill the swirl pot? Would it not simply get filled quicker? The overflow/return to the tank would receive the excess. And if I do really need a low pressure pump, which one would do, how high should it's pressure be at maximum?
I need to find a swirl pot of max 1.5 litres. In the UK that seems easy, in the Netherlands fairly impossible or uneconomical. That in itself should be doable if a trusted source can be found. I'm leaning towards a OBP 1.5 litre bulkhead mounted tank. Anyone know of a trustworthy source that has no trouble shipping internationally?

Could you not use a granada injection tank? (try ovalchat) there are loads of racers who come over from the netherlands to race in the UK, i know a few recers who build cars over here for dutch racers to come race, get in with one of them and get him to bring it back ? TBH i just get my carb tanks cut open and have a sierra swirlpot inserted, had 4 or 5 done over the years by Steve Taylor, his number is at the bottom of this CF artical www.classicfordmag.co.uk/files/2010/10/CLF149.zetec_.pdf |

I converted a Ford Pinto engine to EFI and used a swirl pot as follows:   The swirl pot is fed from the original mechanical pump through a filter and then at the bottom of the pot is a large bore outlet for the high pressure pump / filter. The pot also has a return to the tank and a return from the injector rail pressure valve. I think the reason for not using a high pressure pump from the tank to the swirl pot is as you corner, accelerate and stop the pump will be starved of fuel and become full of air. This will give you aerated fuel in the swirl pot causing the engine to run badly. I also believe that when high pressure pumps are constantly starved of fuel it can cause them to fail prematurely. Hope this helps. |

If it is an original in tank pump (for an injection engine) it will have it's own built in swirl pot or sump, otherwise it will be a low presser pump. Most if not all cars with in tank pumps are in their own pot and usually have the fuel sender unit as part of the assembly. |

Point is for a coupe the injection tanks aren't plentyful. Besides, the whole system is geared towards using a swirl pot as it was once before converted. The previous swirl pot no longer fits so I need a smaller one. I also didn't like cutting into my tank and welding on it. Besides the tank might get modified later on as it probably will be joined by a LPG ring tank. |

Only thing is, my engine does not have a mechanical pump so I'll have to find a low pressure electric one... |

Without the in tank pot, I think you'd indeed starve and possibly kill the pump... |

Thanks Berend, I'll look into those. I think your argument for the low pres pump is also valid! Mine pumps from the tank using the original high pressure pump in to a swirl pot which then feeds two external pumps to feed two engines. |
