thought I had better do a thread on the A as its been going through quite a few changes recently . having achieved what i set out to do with the escort in 2013 i sold it on and bought a car I had wanted for years . those who know me outside of the race track will know i've been into the hotrod scene for a long time but never quite got round to owning a proper 30's hotrod .well the chance came up to get the A and i took it owned by fellow nightmares club members for around 9 years i knew the car well and knew all of its good and bad bits so seemed the right way to go when getting my first rod . The car was built in the 80's pretty much exactly how it was when i got it bar the colour . this is how it looked when it was first built in the 80's : when the guy who built it sold it on it was painted the colour it was when i got it last year. how it looked when i got it last year :

anyway with Hotrods the whole idea of them is that they are a car built to the owners tastes a totally personalized vehicle and although the car was very good there are numerous parts of it that are not to my taste that added to the fact hotrods were built very differently to how they are today with way more quality parts available . some of the parts the car had been built with were looking quite dated and some parts were just plain worn out . so my plan was to run it around for the first year as it was have some fun with it but also work out what was wrong with it what needed up dating and generally put in place a plan for its revamp. it was built in the standard uk hotrod format for the 80's with a rover v8 auto box and the engine was pretty much stock only mods being headers inlet and carb so power wise it was nothing to get exited about but the engine ran well and even turn in a respectable 15.3@90mph so i was happy with that but have never been a fan of the rover so that was instantly on the list of parts to be changed even before i had been and collected the car pic from dragstalgia where it ran an identicle 15.3 to what it it did an shakey a few weeks earlier :

The biggest thing about this particular Hotrot that we found when driving it is the colour we got comments about the colour all the time which made the choice to change the colour quite hard but having been a painter by trade the paintwork was one of my priority jobs the car is a hotrod its meant to be showy the paint on the car is what i classed as a 20 foot paint job it looks fine and its nice and bright and shiny till you get close it was basically a cheap blow over nothing removed when it was done and not much prep work of finishing involved add to that the runs and fish-eyes (silicon in the paint) and it really wasn't as nice as it first looked but people loved the colour and never noticed the flaws in it . so the new colour needed to be something that A:completely changed the cars appearance and B:gave it that same wow look at that colour . and it was delving deeper into what was going to be needed to achieve that that made the project kind of snowball .over the few months I was using the car I was collecting some of the parts for the transformation and had been making a list of all the parts that were going to need doing . the wiring was pretty much shot none of the gauges worked I wasn't particularly fond of the ones it had anyway but when i fitted a nice new set of So-Cal ones they also wouldn't work due to the wiring so ended up running separate new wiring for the gauges all the old gauges were tested and actually worked fine so i sold those on .

so with the wiring and the paint needing doing and the fact i had already decided to change the engine the decision was taken to pull it off the road after the show/race season was over . end of November i pulled the car into the workshop to start the strip down . by the end of the day I had the body stripped and off the chassis with body off I had a chance to properly asses the chassis and it was apparent that was also well over due a freshen up so the decision was made to completely strip that and the body down to their bare components and go through each part and freshen up or replace it basically rebuilding the whole car from scratch not because it had been done badly but just time had taken its toll on it .

rover engine and box were removed and passed on to a good friend for a project they have and a 350ci and 700r4 box purchased to go in its place chevy sat in place for the new mounts to be made : [imghttps://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/10847846_10204377640495609_7758970642683762214_n.jpg?oh=f6d715176ef04255d6826b2652176dc1&oe=55842BCA&__gda__=1434307548_bfd947bfa4d698bff555e24a0c562cb8][/img] once I knew where it was going to go it was time to get on with the freshen up on the rest of the chassis whilst the chassis was in bare metal I decided it would be a good time to make a better tow bar. being a model A sedan they have have no boot and very little space inside the car so a tow bar is very handy to attach a small trailer to act as boot space. it had a tow bar before but it was so ugly it had been removed as with a lot of things tow bars have come a long way and hidden towbars are easy to come by now days and I just happened to have a westfelia clip on one from my old VW bora so was just a matter of making a new mount for it

with the chassis all painted it was time to get it all back up and rolling which meant new bushes brakes ect ect back axle was given a freshen up suspension arms all refurbished with new bushes and ball joints new shock were needed for the front and the springs were cleaned up and painted one of the bits that really dated the car was the wheels plus I found a big issue with then when i took them off . the offset of the rear wheels was wrong and had been sorted by fitting spacers not normally a problem but 4 steel non hubsentric spacers on the stock length studs on each side is a very big problem as it caused a vibration and left the wheels held on by just 3 turns of the threads. the old wheels were sold to a guy in scotland and new 8x16 rears and 5x15 fronts with the correct offset purchased wheels were painted in a cream colour

all new brake lines and fuel lines were fitted using proper clips instead of cable ties that were holding the old ones on brake servo was also rebuilt as when I removed it a found it was full of brake fluid so repair kit was bought for the servo and the master cylinder and then a fresh coat of black paint with the basic chassis done i moved over to the body specifically the bulkhead as the body could then be fitted back on the chassis and make some room in the workshop for painting the car itself bulkhead was done in the same cream colour as the wheels as was the under side of the floor

rebuild of the engine was next . the block turned out to be a really good one 4 bolt 350 in really great condition with no ridges or damage and also very clean only requiring a general freshen up . again being a hotrod the engine should never be left stock so a big order of goodies from WASP with a bit of a fopar on my part when ordering the new pistons i accidentally ordered the wrong ones and found they dint quite reach the top of the bores turns out the ones i had ordered where for a 383 stroker . again WASP to the rescue and new ones ordered and i was back on track again . the engine should have more than enough power for what it was built for and should make for a fun and very entertaining drive  and a lick of paint on the block for good measure another little job was to give trans a quick freshen up and fit a new wiring kit in it for the overdrive and converter lockup as these are normally computer controlled this makes it possible to switch the converter lock up in and out trans also got a coat of colour before being fitted in the chassis ready for the body to go back on

time to fit the body back on  bit of a cock up here turns out i hadn't taken into account the rediculous placment of the distributor on the chevy and mounted the engine to far back so back out with engine and the chassis mounts for the engine moved again  right engine back in again and everything that surrounds it trial fitted all snug as a bug few

Obviously been following this build elsewhere Mark.
Happy to see the thread now.
As expected, a rather spectacular result.
Well done to you and Karen for letting you get on with it.

Superb stuff!
Is that House of Kolor Rootbeer? Really looks so much better suited to being a darker colour; the turquoise certainly tied it down to a particular period of hotrodding - the new colour looks much more timeless (same goes for the wheels too)
I bet people wont believe it's the same car when it's back together.
Are you keeping the rake, out of interest?
Joe
