	in the dim and distant past, i have done this- but back then there was a local old boy i was referred to by a bike shop who did all their wheelbuilding. i could either take him a spoke, or take him the hub and rim i wanted to combine and he had a magical formula to give me what length i needed to order. now everything like that its gone and its all online, i'm finding it much harder to do this. i need to put together some wheels for a custom bike I'm building. rear is easy, as i'm using a rim and hub that are intended for each other, so i can just remove some spokes and measure them. the front is a little harder as i'm changing rim size. i can get a spoke length calculator online (even though they all seem to use different formulas which is a bit worrying) but I'm struggling to find reasonably price suppliers of the spokes themselves. they're all either massively expensive, or wont sell me spokes will only build me wheels. seeing as i used to build bicycle wheels for a local shop, i know I'm more than capable of building my own wheels so don't really want to pay someone else hundreds of pounds to do so. so, anyone got any good sources to actually buy the bits to do it myself? ideally looking for stainless.

	cheers for that, youve found better prices than i did. i still wouldnt call £75 for a set of spokes cheap though, i think this is going to be more expensive than i first thought!

	May be a bit far from you but try calling Vince at colwoodwheelworks.co.uk/. As well as building them, he also runs a three day course on how to do it. I think spoke sizing comes right at the top of the agenda. Apparently you can easily pay £50 for a half decent set of bicycle spokes, so £75 probably isn't too far off.

	If you are going to a smaller rim have you thought of shortening the existing spokes and re-cutting new threads onto them. Would obviously only work if you want shorter spokes, and they are plain gauge straight ones. Used to do it building Bicycle wheels back in the day when the correct length spokes were not in stock, had a tool with various heads for different thickness of spoke.

	That tool would have been rolling a thread onto the spoke, not cutting it. The wire gauge is actually a bit less than the outer diameter of the thread so the roller is effectively pushing material out of the valleys into the peaks. Makes for a stronger thread with no stress risers apparently.
