Hi all I’ve been a long time lurker (just checked and it’s been 7 years!) and very occasional contributor on here so I thought it about time I made my own thread.
I’m not much of a wordsmith or a photographer but I thought I’d share some of aspects (the appropriate ones) of my honeymoon.
We decided to go to Malta, hot in October – check, cheap deals available – check, interesting history – check and what’s that, there happens to be a historic motorsport event or two in early October. I managed to persuade the other half that we should change our planned dates to coincide with the Valetta Grand Prix (or more accurately the Mdina Grand Prix). www.vallettagrandprix.com/
The event consisted of a hill climb and then circuit race both on public roads on two separate days (thus I had to concede to a 10 day holiday as she resigned herself to two days of ‘my stuff’ - shame).
Anyways it was a great event with an unbelievably relaxed atmosphere, and I definitely can recommend making it a part of a holiday.
The hillclimb was first, the course was held on a nice smooth dual carriage way. We struggled to find out any info about it at all so we just set off in the Skoda hire car and eventually, rather through luck than good judgement, managed to blag our way to park on opposite side of the carriageway where the cars return to the start. Here’s some pics:
First off the view from halfway up the hill, now I’ve been to a lot of hillclimbs watching my old man competing since I was a child, this was definitely a break from the norm.
Quick MGB
Lovely Alan Mann liveried Mk1 Escort – thats collected a cone
Alfa – car of the event for me
Racing TR??
Pretty Porker
Another Porsche
Jaguar (C type I think)
Very quick Mini
Blindingly fast Imp
Sebring MGC I think
Nice X19
Jag XK150
This Italian guy was a loon in his great vintage Fiat
Well prepped Alfa
A few of them on the way back down and from around the paddock
Another lovely Alfa this time without the arches
Another TR with a bonus Skoda hire car in the background!
That Fiat again
Couple of my fave
Triple Webers mmmmm.
Engine mmmmm.
Another Fiat – bit smaller this time
Lovely Porsche taking a short cut back to the start after a massive moment – my heart was in my mouth nevermind the driver!
They even had retro tow cars
So then we popped to the pub for lunch – look who turned up outside for a lunch and a pint!
Couple of days later was race day – held on some rather less smooth narrow lanes!
The loon again – you should have seen him holding on to the side of the car through this corner. He was at least as twice as quick as all the similar age motors.
Of which this lovely Citroen was one
Some good racing between these two
There are plenty of classics full stop in Malta one so here are some of the day to day spots – the ones I had a chance to photograph.
This was a diesel?? Didn’t know they did one.
Loads of cool mid sized pickups over there
I was temped to try and bring this one home
One night there was even a mini mini show in the local resort
Last but not least , it wouldn’t be a malta thread without a bus
Hope you enjoyed them.
