Okay, just lobbing a random idea out there.
Would using a Taxi chassis be a good start for creating a hot/rat rod? I notice they are regularly available on the bay of E for not too much with V5. Any thoughts??

Yea there a really solid chassis i used one under a 32 Roadster i was putting together 25 plus years ago then when nearing completion a total stranger appeared and made me an offer i would have been silly to refuse so moved it on ...... go for it just be carefull that you don't hack the chassis about if you just want to go for a rebody to keep the v5/identity , theres plenty of info on rebodying so have a read first or just go for it ....

There's not really a lot of taxi left in there anymore.

Hi, doesn't matter, the all important identity and points are on the chassis.

Like landys. I know one that over the years has had pretty much everything replaced - chassis & bulkhead, axles, engine & box, all the suspension, rear tub, wings, doors, etc etc. I think the bonnet's original. Not much is different, not a like it's got a big engine & coil springs, just a grandfather's axe type situation. But then there's trucks that are mostly new defender bits & Range Rover running bits, on tax-exempt plates, and they get shirty when it's pointed out.

That Rods and sods one really isn't legally a taxi anymore, despite what anyone might say. For the time and effort that's gone into making it something it's not, he could have started with a lot more suitable base car.

I thought a body swap, even to a specially fabricated body, was within the letter and the spirit of the law. Is your point that it's lost too many points due to the other mods? Dez you obvs know your shizzle where mad-elaborate projects are concerned but I've got unfulfilled ambitions to do something with a Taxi/Spitfire/whatever chassis involving a specially fabricated or modified body so if it's not the correct or legal way to do it then I'd like to know more about the better/best/right way to go about it.

It's not just a rebody though. I've not read the whole thread, but I've seen enough to tell you it retains 0 points on the DVLA 12 point system. Chassi points lost due to C-notch and chopping front suspension off, steering points lost due to transit steering box, engine and box points gone, axles and suspensions points gone due to front end swap to aftermarket beam. He's being just as naughty as anyone else trying to make out its still a taxi.

So if I was looking at a Taxi as the basis for a body swap, but didn't have the talent to mod the chassis or swap the steering box or suspension, it would still be viable as a legal project? What would the appropriate way be to mod and register a modded car with the above mods? Would it always end up as a Q plate?

Leave the chassis alone, and retain enough part go have the minimum 8 on the DVLA Radically Altered Vehicle list, and you need no extra testing and can retain the original VRM. www.gov.uk/vehicle-registration/radically-altered-vehicles
