I've just fitted a pair of twin 40 Solex carbs to my Starlet. It's running high lift cam, ported head etc. Fires up & revs great, obviously over fueling though. Knowing nothing about them, how much adjustment is there on them without changing the jets? My main problem however is that petrol comes out the wrong end of the carbs! It drips after running for about 5 mins from the air filter end of the carbs-not good new especially when they're sat above the exhaust manifold. Is this common or is it serious? Thank you for you time & wisdom

What kind of fuel pump are you using? Could the fuel pressure be too high? Dripping from the carb sounds like MAJOR overfuelling! ;D

I haven't checked anything, I much admit (shame on me) just wanted to hear them roar! Just using standard mechanical fuel pump, but no regulator, so that could be an option. I'll strip them at the weekend if I get chance & give them a proper clean. Thanks for the idea's

mechanical pump shouldn't be making more than 3PSI if its stock and 6 or 7 PSI if its a fancy after market jobbie. Normally a regulator isn't needed unless you go to an electric pump. Sounds like something sticking. When were these carbs last used?

If you need advice and spare parts (of which Solex parts are now getting harder to source), contact these guys: www.webcon.co.uk/Yes I know they are the 'holding company' of what was originally WEBER Carburettors (- who I believe suffered some financial difficulties in late 80's and early 90's, plus quality problems at a Spanish factory around late 80's) but they also aquired SOLEX. Causes ... Floats sticking but possibly sunk float due to fact it split! When were they last used? ...remember unleaded fuel can 'gel up' if left for more that 18 months etc. If so I bet the idle jet assembly is well gumed up.

They haven't been used for a while, but have been dry stored before I bought them & before I fitted them. No idea how long they've been off a car though. Will have to get a service kit for them & tear them apart & see what's going on

The float jet is probably worn out and letting fuel by when it should be shutting off. Replace it and it'll be fine. One of my Webers did this but because of the angle of the dangle it poured in the bore rather than dripped out the bell end.
