It's fair to say that the wiring on my hillman is garbage and with the dark. Nights I want the lights as bright as possible. The thing I'm unsure about is the way that H4 bulbs should be switched. When I am on low beam, only the low goes to +12v, but when I go to high beam, the high goes to +12v and the low goes to 0v. Should the low and the high both be +12v when I am on high beam? I want to figure this out for when I re do the wiring Thanks in advance James

they come on seperatley
make yourself up a new loom with relays in it to remove any voltage drop in the old wiring /switch , you can use the old wire to trigger the relays

If you use both the bulb will explode/melt/break, too much heat with both elements "lit", that's why when you flash both work but not on perminant You can find relayed looms for under a tenna to get a full 12V+ at the bulb or make your own

Do some research on bulbs too. I went from standard halogen to these Made a big difference to the light output and give a crisper light. They don't last as long apparently but I drive my Rover all year so I want the best lights I can find. Dave

I agree on those bulbs, bought some on eBay, much better light. Swapped them on the Disco now need to fit some to the Alfa which doesn't look fun.

Not done anything with relays (yet!) on mine but found rerouting the main harness and fitting new light units was a *huge* upgrade ( info retrorides.proboards.com/thread/174787/show-me-homemade-single-headlights?page=1&scrollTo=2032627 and on the Hunter build thread). For wiring on the bulbs, the terminals are #1 permanent earth, #2 12v feed for low-beam, #3 12v feed for high-beam. It's possible to rewire using just 2 relays, I'd fit them near the battery or on slam panel to keep the wiring short & simple. 1 = "main" on/off relay, trigger using sidelight circuit. Connect to battery to give direct 12v feed when sidelights are on. 2 = high/low relay, trigger using existing highbeam circuit. Connect to output from relay1 and use this to switch the output between high/low terminals on the bulb. Connect terminal #1 on the bulb to earth to make everything work. Hope it helps.

Cheers everyone, I'll look into getting some better units, if the wiring doesn't sort it out

mate its easy as pie as long as yours is h4 (they sell others iirc)
new loom fit the 2 plugs onto the headlight bulbs , one old headlight plug into the new loom to trigger it , power and earth onto the battery and then tidy it up with cable ties
very very easy...if you got stuck just ask on here

Very true - have just ordered a few of these (1 for lights, 1 for new 'leccy fan, and a spare) - great value for fused plug & play relays with a tidy wiring harness I also added a few other items from their online shop while I was there... Many thanks for the heads-up, I.U.O. 1 x RR brownie point* (*or drink of your choice at RRG15 ) Cheers

Looks good value and very easy, just a shame they didn't use the fused relays that they sell, make it that little bit safer. Also means that the cars wiring stays standard, useful if it ever becomes very collectable, un-messed about with cars always fetch more money!
And don't forget, while using a higher amp wire to provide 12V to the bulb will improve the light output, you need to use the same amperage wire for the earth return.
