Should you buy it?
Yes!
IIRC, they're mostly Nissan running gear
My Dad used to run an original Austin FX4 as his daily. It was massive. Like bus sized proportions!
Excellent for driving round town at night with the back full of mates, and also bus lanes FTW!

I bought one (older FX4) as an engine donor. They rot EVERYWHERE. With being a business vehicle they tend to have the min done to get them back on the road and start earning money again so if anything goes wrong so expect lots of bodges. Parts are easy to source and cheap. Easy to work on as well. Forget different wheels unless you are prepared to have custom items made (banded ? ) as obligatory London taxi regulations tight turning circle means massive front offset.

That's a creepy thought. I've fancied one for years but always choke at the prices. If they're in anyway decent then someone, somewhere in the country might run it as a taxi so it'll be worth more to that person that to someone like me who just wants an interesting hobby car. Same with Hilux pickups, recovery wagons and the like, anything that can earn it's crust. But, as above, but it. Heaps of potential.

Very useful tool a Taxi, turns on a half penny. very reliable ,Loads and loads of space, easy mechanical s ok Body rots but thats just bread and butter on this site! And you are obligated to cut everyone up, and stop at any given time without signalling, downside I guess is if you are at the traffic lights someone will jump in the back, and ask you to take them somewhere! Buy it.

A real shame these have disappeared from the streets of London, along with the Routemaster buses. They're cheap as chips generally, aren't they? I remember seeing an ad for a really tidy early 1960s one for sale for sub 2k iirc a couple of years back. Have a picture of a bladdy old one with a bladdy iconic actor stood near it.

indeedy -google it he seems to enjoy running his one lol I just googled it - Me too. Glad I didn't do it at work earlier. If this does get bought (the Fairway that is!) a fruity engine needs to be installed I saw a Metrocab in a scrapper years ago with a Ford V6 up front, still had the skinny tyres on the back, must've been a right laugh.

Aren't there a couple of blends of these, with a mix of ratios for town and motorway driving? A town ratio on the motorway leaving you revving its nuts off and not going above 60mph. At that price though it seems like a steal.

The wheelchair access requirement killed a lot of the working cabs off. The older models could be converted but it meant they would be out of action, and the owner therefore not earning, for a couple of weeks so a change to the later TX1 became more viable. At one time there were taxi specialist with yards full of older models selling them for a pittance. I paid £125 for a Land Rover engine one which had a MOT but slightly crunched wing (lights still OK). Even sound versions were only something like £500-600 !
