With the SA exchange rate continuously deteriorating against virtually all currencies, it might be a proposition worth considering to source cars here. Due to the considerable costs to import parts, it is often not viable to restore good cars. Especially in the interior of the country, where it is extremely hot and dry, as a bonus, almost rust free older cars are still available. I do not know what shipping and other charges will be, but once again it might be worth investigating. I am willing to assist with spotting and sourcing, provided I am not out of pocket too much. We might be able to do some bartering as I also need parts etc. from abroad from time to time and if someone can in turn source it for me second hand, it might enable me to achieve small goals on my side. I have considerable knowledge evaluating bodywork as I was previously a hands on partner in a motor body repair shop and have over years repaired and maintained the family's vehicles myself, both mechanical and body work. Look at the examples and prices and judge if it is a proposition. Or let me know what you are looking for.

Some interesting items currently available which I selected rather randomly from adverts, BUT HAVE NOT SEEN THE FIRST TWO IN THE METAL, are the following:
1967 Volvo Amazon - though rusted seems salvageable, all trim supposedly with car. Price: £1 300/$1 900/€1 600
1964 Ford Anglia Panelvan 4sp. Apparently restored. Price: £2 150/$3 250/€2 750
1984 Ford P100 bare cab and chassis, including doors and bonnet, but EXCLUDING load body, you'll need all mechanicals and trim, 100% rust free, professionally restored in 1991 from bare metal and totally stripped, underbody sealed again and remainder thoroughly tectyled, finished in 90's GM white, dry stored since 1992. Price: £1 720 /$2 600/€2 200
NOS 3,0 Ford Essex uprated 110kw engine (last in production). Never started. Price: TBA
These are purchase prices only. Everything else has to be added.

Probably not that viable to be honest, going on the Amazon, you can pick up cars ready to drive away for around that price and projects can still be found for under a grand. Old Fords have their appeal but again by the time they're over here you'd probably not being saving much if anything for what you'd pay for a car over here.

Ok, so it does not seem worth it. Guess you have the benefit of big numbers sold initially. Will nevertheless keep eyes open for XR8's (chicken teeth - not even many sold new) and Falcons which again are no longer a plenty around.

I recall Practical Classics magazine doing a trip way back (when Will Holman was editor maybe?) to buy fin-tail Mercs. The idea was to buy 2 cheap, bring them both over here and sell one at a profit to make the other 'free'.
I can't remember how it turned out, or if they got the cars registered back here.

i think you'd only find buyers for cars that don't exist in the UK or suitably rare enough to warrant exporting them.
i'd be interested in 70's fairmont GT's
or 70's chevy/holden SS models
dodgerover: to my knowledge no aussie chrysler products were built in SA, most 70 era Valiants/Chrysler are american and they didn't get slr's, HT/HK monaro's and HQ sedan/monaros, utes badged as el caminos are mainly what i've seen in SA

I'm pretty sure they definately got the cl cm valiants as a couple of wagons did make it over here, one green one got bangered when the owner couldn't sell it and the other blue one belongs (I think, but could be wrong) to the man who had the genuine one remaining uk export auto r/t charger prior to it going back to Aus a few years ago.
Fairmont GT would be nice....

I bought in a series 1 manual overdrive XJ6 and my Splitty Crew Cab from SA in 2004. I think it's a good place to find some good rust free metal - personally I'd be looking at Nissan 1200 pick ups/bakkies. There's a South African muscle car forum that has some interesting stuff for sale - and Gumtree can give an idea of what's available at what prices. Unsurprisingly, if the buyer thinks the car is going out of SA the price can firm up. When I was looking there was a pretty good mix of stuff available - just missed out on a 1963 Lancia Flaminia coupe in mint condition for £3000 and should have bought a RHD 1963 Studebaker Hawk GT. Really don't know why I didn't.

dodgerover: after reading your reply, i searched the internet and found a lot of cars sold by Chrysler in SA, basically anything based on a aussie body was only fitted with a 225 slant six, so no V8's and importantly no /6 hemi's, so nothing really worthwhile IMO they sold a lot of US/Europe based cars as well, have a read if you get bored www.allpar.com/world/south-africa.htmli think that guy's name was possibly Steve and i may have met him at the ace cafe one year or heard about his auto R/T charger there |

There's a company importing escorts from SA already, been at it for a decade or so  mscimporters.co.uk/There are other who import from Aus and a few that import LHD only shells from europe so there is a profit to be made but i think only iff you import a few at a time, individualy wont really make it worthwhile IMHO ? Most muscle car owners in SA don't like selling a car to leave the country, try asking on www.africanmusclecars.com/forum/ and see how far you get  |

I think they used to make manifolds for Ford Kent engines to put twin IDF type Webers on - or how about a Meissner OHC conversion for the Kent engine (poor quality wobbly children's play pony poo probably!).

A few years ago it was pointed out on a VW site that anyone trying to join a South African VW site were being blocked. Reason for this is they think we were buying all T25/T3 parts to import back here. Anyone caught with a UK IP address were instantly banned

Datman already does that with ealy Jtin but from Aus i beleive ? There "should " be a load of old BDA engines somewhere in SA, basil green motors sold them off cheap and stuck pintos in Mk1 RS1600s (before Ford made the RS2000) but as said getting anyone in SA to let them go is rather hard, i tried for years to get a bakkie styleside for a mate and all it did was get me banned from the SA muscle car forum, twice |

Got my dad looking for a few projects for me over there. He lives in Joburg and has seen quite a few decent examples lying in front and rear gardens...almost abandoned in favour of newer "plastic" rubbish. Bargains can be found if you get out there and rummage.... but beware of stolen cars or cars with "no papers". Oh.....and the prices tend to balloon if your foreign accent is picked upon.
