Motoway driving is a ball ache at the best of time. I tend to stick to the middle lane just a few mph faster than the lorries in the slow lane and stay there, even if you flash your super bright leds at me,you can allways use the Audi/Bmw lane

Better brakes on modern cars is largely irrelevant. If you've got cars with similar braking performance travelling together at the same time then unless they're too close they'll not touch. Doesn't matter how fast they're going. Same goes for if the car behind has poor brakes in comparison to the one in front. Speed isn't a factor, driver behaviour is.
I think the reason the average speed has dropped isn't down to fuel prices. It's congestion, company cars which automatically fire off an email to your boss if you go over 85mph and the increasing amount of speed cameras causing it. Until those last two factors affected me I'd happily sit at 95mph all day. Never had a bang or collected points despite doing about 50k miles a year.

See, I'm one of those people who quite happily sits in the slow lane No such thing. It's lane 1 then the rest are for overtaking.

How so !!!nothing contradictory in sitting in the middle lane, keeping up with the traffic in front. The use of the word oxymoron if used correctly is a useful word . Other times i just shows ignorance.

I suppose one could say that motorway driving is a ball ache because a lot of people seem to prefer sitting in the middle lane all day

yip it is but not for me Anyhow it was only a joke, i don't sit in the middle lane i sit in the outside lane at 70mph I really do find motoway driving a royal PITA, in normal day to day driving i rarely use them, but when i do use them its normally a trip down sarf to see the wifes family 600+ miles with the kids and and animals i rarely go over 80mph which is fine ,i just try to keep up with the car in front and keep a steady pace .

About brakes: they are better, but the human reaction times aren't and most people never use maximum brake performance anyways, even when faced with imminent crashing ahead. They are scared to use their brakes to the fullest extent, and they're kinda right to be because that would be way too violent for their driving skill (I include myself in that). Most people try to brake progressively, hence making their stopping distance artificially longer.
Also, most accidents are caused by large differences in speed: people entering the motorway, braking when leaving it, fast cars overtaking lorries, etc. Raising the speed limit would make matters worse for that because slow vehicles won't go any faster, but fast vehicles will. Bigger differences mean more accidents, and more violent when they happen.
I sometimes find myself having to drive a tad faster than the speed limit on the motorway, I'm not a perfect driver by any measure but I really don't think the speed limit on the motorway is an important matter at all.
As broadie said, motorways are utterly boring and only show the bad sides of our cars I find.

Ah yes the good old 'raise it to 80mph', so why do I find myself passing on the left at 65mph at least 2-3 times a week and having to brake to pull out into lane 2 for overtaking? The motorways are too congested at peak times, too many distracted drivers with aids belting down 5ft from the car infront because the modern brakes etc.
Leave it as is, it's a sensible balance that the country is accustomed to, even 4 lane motorways are too much for some!

You complain that motorway driving is a ballache whilst stating that your driving style is that which would make motorway driving a ballache for those around you.

M/way driving would be far easier for everyone if people stopped referring to 'slow lane' and 'fast lane'. They don't exist. As we all know from our driver training and the Highway Code, lane 1 is for driving in. If you come up to someone driving slower then you use lane 2 to overtake them and move back into lane 1. If while overtaking them in lane 2 you come across a slower car in lane 2 you move into lane 3 and so on. But you should always move back to lane 2/1 etc once you've overtaken the slower vehicle. How many times do we see idiots sitting in lane 2/3 etc whilst overtaking nothing? Too often unfortunately. These are often the same people who complain about other drivers 'undertaking' them on the left. Well, if they had been using the lanes correctly the 'undertakers' would not be able to pass on the left. Additionally it's now an offence to 'hog' the outer lanes unnecessarily. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23713732

In an attempt to add some cool car content to this thread, have a video of Smokey Nagata of Top Secret showing what he thinks of the 70mph speed limit on UK motorways..

I find when I'm in the Townace I tend to sit at 65, popping up to 70 occasionally to keep the interest levels up. In the BMW I set the cruise control at 70 otherwise it's far top easy to end up at 90 without realising (and 70 gives spectacular mpg lol).
What I find amazing is the number of people who can't maintain a steady speed. Sitting with the cruise control on at 70 I regularly catch up and pass people only to have them pass me a few miles later. Then they slow and the process repeats. My kids counted 7 occasions on a 40 mile stretch where we passed the same Volvo only for him to pass us back lol
At work I find exactly the same problem when driving the minibus which is limited to 62. You often catch people (slowly) , pull out to pass and then find them accelerating away so you have to pull in behind them!
