Just trying to sort the sounds out in the car. My stereo puts out 4x50w, I only currently have 2 speakers connected (rears) and they are 300w 6x9s. What sort of amp should I get to make them sound awesome? In terms of power and channels and stuff - I don't actually know much at all about this sort of thing!

well alot of speakers will claim outragous watts figures - same with lower end amps being xxx watts max
a good quality clean genuine 70-120 rms would wake up the 6x9
channels wise if you want 2 speakers then 2 channel / a 4 channel would give the choice to upgrade and run fronts off it as well , or in most cases you can bridge /join those 2 spare channels into one and run a subwoofer
stick with good brands and only read into the rms figures , its a bit like a big engines car , you can have a huge amp ticking along just above min all day long and do no harm, rather than a cheapie market one flat out distorting your speakers

I have a vague idea of how to do things, but I would not call myself an expert. Your stereo will not put out 4x50W  . It may put or 5 or 10W per channel at best ; the manufacturer of the HY (like many companies) only put on maximum output figures to basically lure us in. The same goes for the 6x9s. What is their RMS output? Either way, a simple 2 channel amplifier will do the job well, and as long as you are careful with the gain control (which you should be regardless of the combination) most amplifiers will be fine, even with 100W RMS being put out per channel. You are opening up a can of worms for saying that you have a pair of 6x9s on the rear shelf for the so called audio buffs, but I shall leave that there  . |

Thanks fellas - i'll look into the upgradable 4 channel option, I'll just double check the rms figure on the speakers. I know round component speakers are better but it's kind of on a budget and they were already fitted so I'm fime with them |

I was referring to them being in the back more than anything. Nothing all that much wrong with Co-axial speakers for most applications . But I can appreciate that in an old car something can be better than nothing . |

amped 6x9 will sound pretty good if youre not that into your audio , can always use the amp on other future speakers anyway
have you beefed up where they're mounted ? once amped they will some kick to them , a strong mdf shelf or at least re inforced panels around the speaker will help the sound

If it was me, I'd pick up some cheap components and put them up front. Bin the 6x9's as they will drag the sound stage back.
Small subwoofer in the boot to pick up the frequencies the components miss.
All 6x9's will give you is low-mids to lows.
The old phrase "You don't go to a concert and turn your back to the stage" is relevant here.

I actually tried to put a couple of speakers up front but there's no where for them! I managed to squeeze one behind a door card (don't want to cut 40 year old card) and still some holes to pad the wires through but it caused the weather step to fold and let water in! So I've just binned them off! I am actually really into sound quality, I just don't have the funds to do it properly at the moment |

The ones I tried to fit are actually smaller than them! Is all in my daily 78 Cav not the Capri and there's limited space for stuff. No storage behind kick panels or under dash. There isnt really any space for the headunit either but I've managed to squeeze it in!
