I have just had my E46 318 MOT'd and it passed without issues but had the following advisories:
Under trays fitted obscuring some underside components. Engine covers fitted obscuring dome components in the engine bay. This is on an unmodified car and the covers are OEM, so why is it even an issue? This advisory hasn't appeared on any of the past MOTs, will it now be recorded so it will show on future tests?
Cheers all, any tales of other MOT related weirdness welcomed.

Standard practice for a picky tester. Just ignore it.

i MOTed the inlaws audi a2 the other day, it got an advisory on 'side skirts fitted'. its a factory stock car. he must have been scared those plastic covers were hiding galloping rot in the aluminium and plastic underneath them

Mot Regs changed late last year... I believe even if a car has factory fitted side skirts, engine covers or undertrays its now logged as an advisory just to protect themselves as they're not allowed to move the objects nothing to worry about, just have to explain it to a potential buyer if your selling the car

It's becoming more common place for them to put this on the ticket but it's not a new thing , I had it on my ax gt back in 2000 and that was to do with the standard fit side skirts

I removed the wheelarch liner on one of my modern cars and found a nasty spot of rust blowing out of the chassis leg, I doubt an mot tester would be able to see it without removing anything until the chassis leg rots through if I don't bother repairing it.

I get it for the sill covers on my Carlton every year - those things hide serious rot if you aren't careful so I understand the backside covering!

Cool, fair enough then, it just seemed a little strange to get an advisory based on an OEM bit of trim. Still not as odd as for curse word wheels, what were they they offended the tester so?

reflecting what has been said, its an covering exercise now this is an odd advisory I had a similar humor one "slow in fast out would be a better approach to corners" In my defence the fronts did have a fair bit of shoulder wear but were legal - I did replace them later.

Some cars undertrays and engine covers can hide so much of the car that it is impossible to test half of it. Porsche 911's are especialy bad but most BMW's and Audis have trays that cover everything from rear axle to the front bumper, it is mostly necessary ass covering, the same as "child seat fitted preventing proper inspection of adult belt". The Ministry are trying to clamp down on the less official advisaries at the moment, probably with a view to the changes in the MOT test next year. Shame!

does annoy you though. last year one of my beetle had "heavily undersealed, poss hiding corrosion" as an advisory. same place and tester has tested it for the last 8 years. always comments on how nice it is as its a satin black early look sunroof bug. ive own it 15 years and never undersealed it or needed to repair the floorpan as its a cali import. the heavy underseal is a coat of stonechip applied way before I got it on a mint unwelded floorpan. felt more like a dig at the car than an advisory, bit of a dick move on the MOT testers part as that car has never failed an mot in my hands because I look after it. regardless of weather they are covering their ass or not it properly annoyed me!

I had an advisory about "unable to assess welded repairs to floorpan as welds not visible". I queried that and was told he likes to see the weld lines... considering I'd only primered and topcoated it and was MOTing it before putting on stonechip I didn't know whether to take it as a compliment or tell him to "Do One". He then bitched about play in the front wheel bearings which I knew was in OEM spec so I told him to F*** off and haven't been back since.....
