While I pondered on something I did with my car (to do with engine swaps or just needing the space) I did another search which I often do for alternative ways around things, like having to remove the A/C compressor. Although I have removed the compressor and condenser, the condenser could be refitted, but the compressor could not be due to lack of space near the serpentine belt. I know some have in the past wished they could fitted A/C to their old motors to make it better for them in those times when you would rather be locked in a fridge with a constant set temp than be in a greenhouse in traffic! Now I knew there was an electric powered alternative for the cooling system pump, but I never knew there was an electric powered alternative for the A/C compressor! globaldensoproducts.com/climate-control/car-air-conditioning-system/compressor/electric-compressor/So here are a couple of questions Does anybody know what vehicles these are fitted to(so people can raid the scrapyards for them)? Does anybody have any experience of working with these 12v dc electric powered compressors? Has anybody replaced the belt driven compressor with an electric powered one? or know a vehicle that has had it done? Since they are not in need of being belt driven they can be fitted anywhere and apart from the condenser and the pipes which could be hidden. Would you retro fit your car with an electric powered compressor driven A/C system? Just something to think about while the weather changes and we are forced indoors and long for those barmy days of summer!

Mate told me about when he went to the US and had a Camaro as a hire car (this was early 80's). Despite the V8 when you switched the air con on he said you could feel the car slowing down to power it. Same thinking could apply to an electric aircon pump. Nothing is free so if you have such an electric pump then where are you going to get the power to run it ? A massive alternator could be required that then takes up some of the space saved by not having an engine driven pump. Some cars now have alternators with such high outputs to power all the electrical gubbings that they have to be water cooled with the consequence of more complicated cooling system and higher cost of the actual alternator. Maybe running twin alternators could be the way to go but there again you might as well fit one plus an aircon pump ! Not trying to be negative but merely pointing out it isn't as simply as fitting an electric pump as there are numerous knock on aspects that will then have to be addressed. Otherwise I'm all for a portable air con unit that could be slotted in the boot area during the summer and removed when it gets colder

I have been looking at this and you can buy a Prius electric unit from ebay but you will need converters etc which looks quite complicated unless you are or know an electric geek..... I also looked at building a box with an aircon pump and an electric motor connected by a belt in it. This could work if you got the motor power and belt gearing right but you would need a fairly big motor if you wanted ice cold aircon rather than a slight cooling.

Composimmonite you are missing the point, 1. If there isn't space to fit a A/C compressor how can you fit a second alternator, I have stated this in the opening post! 2. I have said that things change and stuff that is made now can run rings around something made in the early 80's and a lot of water has passed under the bridge in 30 years! Which is why we need to visit the fountain of knowledge every once in a while, or be left in the past ourselves. Just look at household light bulbs and how much they have changed in the last 5 to 10 years! 3.As this is ment to be a general discussion on the subject, and I was trying not to use my own car as an example, but in my case and there are others like me who don't want such high powered stereos or entertainment systems in our cars. And such a system would be a distraction while enjoying the use of the car, and take up valuable usable space!
A removable A/C unit? and how would it be powered? how much would it drain the car's battery?

I have been looking at this and you can buy a Prius electric unit from ebay A prius now thats a thought, just wait till the weather gets bad and see the scrapyards fill them with the cars idiots damage with their bad driving along with the bay of E. but you will need converters etc which looks quite complicated unless you are or know an electric geek You haven't seen my car's wiring loom time and patients I have plenty of but it is these ideas that can help to inspire people to look into this themselves and point in the right direction with what little each of us has. BUT!! the old saying "Many hands makes light work" does apply as each has a piece of the puzzle.

Hi, I found this post on another forum answering the same question-
" JoeyCool2 years agoReply Don't know if this will help you, but . . . Grassroots EV has an electric A/C unit for EV cars (for the EV Hobbyist) called COOL BLUE which is claimed to use only 500 watts (120v 60Hz AC). coupled with the (I think) BLUE FLASH (DC/AC Inverter); this should get you in the ball park. Also: a 12 D.C volt to 120 A.C. Volt Inverter from the Inverterstore.com may have the inverter you are looking for. I would recommend at least a 1000W to 1500W inverter for the COOL BLUE unit. This DC to AC Inverter would change the 12volt from the car to the necessary 120VAC that the COOL BLUE unit needs. (the higher power rating is for safety purposes). Remember that you would need to use a considerable amount of power from the car's electrical system to power the DC to AC inverter (500W at 12v = aprox. 49A, and at 90% efficiency probably 55A) This IS a lot of current. My disclaimer: Always consult the manufacturer(s) of both the car and the COOL BLUE unit on this idea to see if this is feasable. "
