I've posted a poll on here about putting my renault 5 gt turbo engine in my fiat seicento sporting, which I really want to do. But 1 thing that's bothering me is the tax. As the car is a 51 reg, it goes by emissions, but the engine is a 1988 so wouldn't go by emissions?? Or am I wrong? Anyone know how it will work out before I start the conversion?

I'm under the understanding that for mot emmisions purposes it would go from the year of the engine.

Don't no about tax think you'll find it's the other way around. modern engine in old car is old car emmisions also how would they know what year the engine was? fitting an old engine into a modern car will be a right pain getting it to the modern emmisions. don't know about the tax part but probably a mine field. |

MOT emissions is tested on which ever is provable to be oldest- the engine or the car. If you fit an engine with proof of age into a modern car it has to be tested as per the emissions for the engines date of manufacture.
Your tax class shouldn't change.

This will be interesting to see how resolved. What is regarded as acceptable proof of engine age by DVLA - copy of original donor vehicles V5 showing engine number or will it require confirmation from manufacturer ?
51 reg Fiat will have VED based on emissions and therefore a low group. However the Renault engine being 1988 will have VED based on capacity. I've absolutely no idea how DVLA will treat - keep original Fiat low VED band or increase to higher engine VED rate !
I'm doing the opposite - replacing a higher rate VED engine with a lower rate VED engine (1800TC to 1275) in my 1985 Q reg Marlin and am hoping a copy of the 1972 1275cc donor V5 will be sufficient proof of engine providence.

the kit car guys have standard letters from manufacturers for IVA proving year of engine from the serial number. R5 probably won't be in that list but the process is the same - check locostbuilders.

The renault is actually cheaper to tax than the fiat! I've got a 1994 renault extra van with a Renault 5 gt turbo engine fitted and it's £140 for 12 months. The fiat seicento is a 1.1 and is £180 for 12 months!!!

going by which is older, car or engine, for emmisions is bonkers so i had to google itseems i was wrong. so you could fit a huge 60's V8 into a modern car and not need an emmisions test. i find that very strange but thats what the link says  |

I assumed, wrongly, that the Seicento would be a low VED band so far less pa and that the 5GT was something like 1600-2000cc. |

How will anyone know the age of the engine?
Look at the engine number then refer to the engine manufacturers production data.

If theres doubt as to the engine age, its a default emissions test based by the year of the car  |
