I recently bought a big Chevy Day Van and a bunch of us have decided to drive it round Ireland at the end of October. I did the same thing round Scotland a few years back so thought Ireland could be cool! Has anyone ever done something similar and could recommend good stopping places or know of any resources to check out for places to drive to? Any tips would be appreciated! Here's the van:

Do you want to take in car places or castles or surfing or nightlife...? Where to recommend depends on what you want to do!

West coast and north coast, it's hard to go wrong. Not much to draw you to the midlands IMO. SW is popular, bit unlikely to be over-run by too many American tourists this time of year. Donegal in the NW is 'Ireland in miniature'. It depends if you're gonna do wild-camping or heading for proper sites. SW has the most proper sites, but don't expect wi-fi and such. Thanks for the tips! Will check this all out.
This might be a really stupid question, but does anywhere check passports when you drive from Northern Ireland into the south?

No border checks, just watch for the driving on left to right changeover! Spent a few weeks doing a road trip in Ireland a few years ago. Loved it, spent a lot of time around the south coast, loved Kinsale, Ring of Kerry including the Healy Pass worth a visit. Cliffs of Moher were also stunning (providing its a clear day) Anymore pics of the van? have a great trip!

No. Your biggest clue to crossing the border will be this.
and the road markings change if you want to find the exact point of the border.

Definitely head to the South West, Kerry in particular. If you are near Skibereen / Glandore area in Cork on the bank holiday weekend there is a tarmac rally on too - The Fasnet Rally

I only ever go to Mayo because I've got family there, can recommend Castlebar for a night on the curse word, and Enniscrone on the coast is jaw-droppingly pretty.

Signs you're south of the border: Everyone on Northern plates start driving quicker. Signs you're north of the border: Everyone on Southern plates start driving quicker. As for locations, I think the bases have been covered already. I'm a big fan of West Cork and Kerry. A camper-owning buddy of mine recommended this site as a list of good spots for overnighting: www.safenightsireland.com/
