Put your reg in and search for oil, that will give you the correct grade

There's various opinions on using a flush - some say it can dislodge too much dirt at once which then blocks the oilways. Personally I've only ever used a flush to keep a clean engine clean, not to clean a dirty engine. When I get a dirty engine I use some cheap oil and do a few 1k oil changes. That way you use the detergents in the oil to clean the engine more gently.
Once you have done a few 1k oil changes then go onto a decent quality oil and change at 5k intervals.
Works for me.
99 Polo - probably a 10W/40 semi-synthetic is about right. Later ones use 5W/30, which you can use just as well in yours.

I am of the opinion not to use a flush, but to change the oil frequently for a few times.
