A Citroen DS for 1200 quid ?? aye ! where ? I'll take it ! So many to you could chose from I think, I'd go for an E30, or how about a Merc 190E,if its abig car you want - plenty of Jags should get an XJ40 at that price, keep us posted.

Another vote for the 190 - mine's my daily and it does the job brilliantly. 40mpg on a run, quiet and comfortable, feels special, and there's a nice one in the classifieds here for £595 with a years rent

Well, some are retro and some aren't. Some cars that were in my price range a few years ago have now appreciated! Out if price range: 205gti 900 turbo E28 Dolomite 200sx Mk4 cortina What I'm looking at / for (not exhaustive) 306gti6 240 volvo, and anything with a t5 Rover 800 vitesse Vvc metro As ita a daily i need to keep the engine size low enough to not cost a fortune but high enough for fun. I disagree, you can still pick up 2.3 940 turbos for less than a grand, and that'd be my choice. Or an 850 T5, but I'm biased I haven't even broken £2k including purchase cost for my 850 and I'm already pushing a healthy 270 ponies. Other than a new M5, there's nothing on my commute that'll keep up

Rover 216 SLi gets my vote. They don't look massively different to a regular R8. Body-coloured bumpers, lack of two-tone and a rear spoiler are, I think, the main difference visually. This R8 is here for illustrative purposes only. Very comfortable, very practical, not appalling on fuel and currently worth buttons even for really exceptional examples. If you've got £1200 to spend it doesn't mean you have to spend all of it and there's a surprisingly large number of excellent affordable 90s cars that are barely distinguishable from brand new cars as a driving experience. Check out many of the Honda and Toyota offerings too, you can get a car fully toyed-up with everything you'd want on a brand new car (except perhaps Sat Nav) but in a cheaper all round package.

If you like quick pugs, there is a 106GTi that came up recently in the for sale section for around the 700 pounds mark. Might be a bit small but I used to run a 106 as my little daily and it did everything I ever asked of it, was fine on longer trips down to cornwall from london too. I think the 190E is the way to go though, a solid car with a nice and comfortable ride.

Brilliant on a back road though.

For a daily in that price range, I would go boring but sensible, unfortunately. AKA Mercedes W124 or Volvo 740-940. Good looking, cheap spares, easy to work on, reliable, comfortable. I would overlook the fact that those cars are as exciting as cold porridge.....

Another vote for LS400,bought for £450 with six months mot still on her, flew through the last mot,now on 191,000 and still silky smooth v8 grunt, but gentle with the loud pedal will give me almost 30 mpg on a run Only things that don't work are the heated front seats, rears ok though
